I siphoned it in when i had to add some to mine, still got a little coudyness but not much and it was gone in 2-3 hours. I dipped the end into the sand and it sort of filled in under the current sand. Regulated the flow by punching the tube. and i tried to get a heavy sand vs water ratio.
dunno if this is the best way to do it. Only other way i heard was to scoop it up into a cup, cover it, submerge it in the tank and then pour it onto the sand bed. could be alot of cup fulls though.
Get a PVC pipe or tube and slide the sand down it and into the tank. This way you can place the sand exactly where you want it and it shouldn't create any sand storms.
OHH thats a great idea....I think i'll try that....I was thinkin maybe i cud put some in a bag and cut a slit in the bottom and let it pour out...but the pipe one sounds better to me..
.... don't use that funnel...... 1-2$ at a supermarket can get u a funnel thats clean and has no left over oil/waste/dirt/grime on it from having it in your car and doing oil changes. Pretty sure a car parts store has one also for cheap. If not make one out of heavier grade paper or printer paper, all you need is a little tape and your set.
Dont you know you absorb oil with sand?

i used the big ziplock freezer bags and it worked pretty good.
1) you fill the freezer bag w/ sand and close it.
2) you lower the bag to the bottom of the tank.
3) you rip off a small corner of the bag and it slowly comes out and it's pretty easy to spread it around w/out a big sand storm.
I've used the large diameter PVC pipe method for a long time. Works great. No need to get a funnel. Just use an empty gallon milk container. Cut off the bottom of the container, invert it into the pvc and whallah, you're ready to go, funnel is free
