Hey Folks,
I?m making my 55g more reef appropriate. Getting rid of my eheim and moving to a sump with refug set up. I have a couple of questions.

For the hang on refug: Can I use my light from main tank as the main source of light for the refug? Since it won?t be directly under it, I?m not sure if it will be enough.

For the sump, I hear about different set ups, different chambers etc. For a basic set up, do I need more than one chamber for a basic sump set up?

I?m also putting in two hydor koralia water pumps. Are these ok?

thanks in Advance

Hey Folks,

Yes this can be done, if the fuge actually gets enough light. I had thought of doing this at one point, but was going to mount my lights and build a hood that would cover the hanf on the back fuge as if it was just a part of the tank.

For the sump, I hear about different set ups, different chambers etc. For a basic set up, do I need more than one chamber for a basic sump set up?

For the most basic of setups you do not need more than one chamber. I ran my sump this way for years.

People add baffles to the sump in order to cut down on microbubbles making it back into the tank. Sometime people build there refurgium into the sump as well, wich requires another chamber. There are a lot of other things that can be done with the sump, wich require more chambers.

I’m also putting in two hydor koralia water pumps. Are these ok?
These are still very new, only out a couple of months, so nobody has long term experience with them. First reports are that they are OK.

If you are putting on a hang on fuge, you might want to consider picking up a cheap CF fixture. Provided you can keep the light from being cast into the main tank itself, a reverse photo period can really help out in maintaining a level pH through the night. What hang on fuge are you thinking of?
