Janey, NRA223 can actually sell the streams to anyone he wants. That is not the proper way to sell things but we can't tell people who they can and cannot sell to. NRA223 informed everyone that herman was next in line via PM and Herman bought it. Thats it!!!!! You didn't get the streams. This has happened to many of us. No big deal.

Lets hear everone else's thoughts......

I agree that this is not a big deal - people can sell to whomever they want. Common courtesy is to respect the "dibs" system, and if Herman PMed before Janey posted, then that system has been respected. Case closed.

I do have a comment on something else I've seen a lot of though. Lately there has been a lot of haggling being done in the threads in the sale forum. What has been the etiquette on this in the past? Has this always happened?

Janey, good to see you on MR again. Been awhile. It might help you to 'claim dibs' on items in the For Sale forum if you are here more often. If you post that you'd like something and then not show up on the boards for a few days, the seller will most likely want to move the item to the next in line.

Let me preface this with the following statement:
I personally feel that anyone is allowed to sell to whomever they want. I think if they do, they should have the courage to also say so. If I decide I want to sell to someone other than the person who called "dibs" oh well, tough. Although, I will publicly admit it.

The following is just because I love playing Devil's Advocate.

Starting where Jhale left off; JHale posted the following:
To clarify,

The seller is allowed to sell to whoever they like,
There are no "dibs" in the rules, where that came from I don't know.
Half the time people who call dibs end up passing so it's a useless thing to say.
The seller may state thier selling rules in the thread, they can be whatever they like as long as it's not an auction.

It is common courstesy to give people who contact the seller first the chance to buy.
People can respond by private message, Reefberry, phone, email, or post in the thread.
There is no way for the buyer to know who contacted the seller
first so we are on the honor system here, that is if the seller wants to go by first contact.

At first I thought it was a cut and paste from the rules but it's not. It's JHale's personal opinion. I'm sure others had the same impressions.

NRA, you ask the see the supposed rule in writing. Well here it is:
Items for Sale:
First Post option: It is common courtesy to sell a priced item to the first person that responds publicly that they will buy the item with no strings attached. You are free to sell the item to the last person that responds, or not deal with specific individuals, but this is generally enough to earn you a reputation as a ?bad reefer?.

Is it that hard to post a message saying,"PM sent"? For some it is, I guess. There is no admission of buying anything with the former statement. That simple statement saves a lot of aggravation and drama.

The For Sale forum, to me, is a catch 22. Yes there are great deals to be had but at the same time it's the worst forum on the board. No other place has so much pugnacious episodes. It's not only on this board; it's widespread across all message boards. In the past months I have seen buyers buy things only to post them on other sites for more money, vendors buying things for their "personal" tanks, demands of unjust refunds and other countless instances of rude behavior.

The best maxim to follow is,"You win some. You lose some." If you made out on great deal, even if through back-door tactics, great. If you got beat, suck it up. This is a hobby not a soap opera.

Well, Janey was at least gracious about the whole thing.

I personally hate the whole dibs thing because most people dont actually follow through. How many times have I waited for people who dibbed and say they were coming just to have them not show up and ignore PMs and calls.

Janey, since you need the stream more than I do, just send me a PM and I will set that up with the seller. Its yours. I just needed a pump to mix salt.

Herm,

I hear you bro. You know how many times I scored on a deal because the 12 people to call dibs fell through. That's why I always post an interest even if I'm 30th in line. When I do sell stuff; it's always who has cash in hand.

I don't see the need to let anyone but the seller know if I'm interested in something. When I sell I check the timestamp on posts and PMs and who ever requested it first gets it. I get annoyed when I post and someone else gets it, but it happens. If you're desperate for something... here's a suggestion...

BUY IT NEW! I can promise that marine depot will sell it to you regardless of who orders before you.

i agree completely...i always check the time stamp on both posts and Pm's just to make sure of the order and follow accordingly. Usually buy here out of convience of not waiting at home for the package and to check out other people's tanks, and hey if i save some money thats jsut an added bonus

and while we are "for sale" pet peeves...

I can't stand when someone posts "maybe interested in item" only to edit it to "DIBS" when other people show interest. editing should not be allowed by potential buyers. At least edited comments should be shown with a strike through.

my posting was an interpretation of the rules the mods wrote out a while ago. the first post thing needs to be updated. as herman pointed out if someone pm's the seller first it's up to the seller to figure out who made first contact.

keep the big picture in mind, the selling forum is a great thing to have, don't stress out if deals do not go your way, there will always be others to be had.

lol - I actually had someone agree to sell me something. While we were settling on a pickup time, he posted it for sale again. No biggy - I just posted in his thread that I thought he had already sold it to me. I don't know if the mods got him, but he stuck to the deal and finally gave me a pickup time.

How about this? I made a deal with a dude here of few fish, agreed on the price and pick up date. two days later he PM'ed me he had to "give" the fish to his "friend". Sh!t happens and I moved on, but I sure won't deal with that person again. Same thing happened again when I told a guy I'll buy a set of Tunzes when I get back in the country (few days later), I PM the guy to confirm the pick up time and location and he responded he sold them:(..

Too many flakes in the hobby.. I can't count how many times people PM me about buying frags from me then not show up while I waited for them.
