If ya want a good glass place, speak to Bad Coffee. =0)

Home depot glass is meh at best. But it works for baffles. They sell that glass that has tons of scratches that people who don't understand glass use to patch a broken glass pane in their french doors :Blurp:

1st off do not use acrylic for baffles with a glass tank...

2nd go to a local glass shop there should be a couple in queens (the local reefers in queens should def. be able to help you out there) the glass should cost ya about 8 bucks at most each...

you can use silicone which is sold at the home depot.. GE silicone I window and door... MAKE SURE that it does not have mold or mildew inhibitors in it... i recently heard they are adding it to everything im not sure of this but if they do i believe they mention it on the bottle itself ;)... if anything you can get your hands on aquarium silicone (home depot sells this to but its not as big as the GE tube which this is your safest bet....)

good luck...

GE is only making treated silicone now. I guess you could find the old non-"BioSeal" treated GE silicone I somewhere, but all GE silicone II is treated. Same is true for their caulking, acrylic, and max acrylic siliconized sealants. I think Lowe's still carries the older silicone I, but I'd check that out and still read the label, although I'm almost certain it is not "mold and mildew resistant".

Home depot does sell glass panels that you can use for baffles in a sump..here is a simple 10gal sump made with 2 glass panels bought from home depot . I think 1 panel was 8x10 and the other was 10x12 which I cut in half to make 2 6in x 10 in divividers.Width wize they fit perfect...I used aquarium silicone which I have used on the previous 5 sumps that I have made with no problems.

If you look in the adhesives section at Lowes or HD you should be able to find DAP 100% AQUARIUM Silicone. Should be fine to use, since it is advertised to be for aquariums. It's around $3 for the big tube. It's not around the other silicone stuff though, it's where the glue is.

Lowes sells glass and they cut it for you on the spot.

The reason people say not to use acrylic with glass is because the silicone will not bond that well between the two creating a weak joint. My first sump worked for about a year before one of the silicone baffles gave out. The second sump I made I used sandpaper to scratch the acrylic and also the glass in the tank I used. This created a better surface for the two to hold onto with the silicone.

For my third sump I used glass. Glass is way better.

As far as silicone use, you DO NOT want to use anything that says: "anitbacterial" or "mildew resistant". Both of these contain chemicals that kill bacteria and are said to be detrimental to the bacteria we need to keep our tanks healthy.
Good luck.

why cant you use acrylic baffles for a glass tank?
I know some people say you can't but I have used 1/8 in acrylic baffles
in 2 glass sumps I made in the past and had no problems whatsoever. There is not alot of pressure form the water on the baffles so I'm not sure what problems you might have. Mine never leaked but even if they did ...so what !!!
I used aquarium sealant to hold the baffles ....one of the sumps was up and running for a year or more..
However for my last sump I also used glass...

Lesson i learned when doing this was be accurate with the glass measurements, makes sealing the baffles so much easier - don't think my missus had heard such profanity before as teh baffles kept sliding about before the silicone could dry :irked:
