I got my long tentacle anenome about 3 days ago. When i brought it home i placed it in the tank in a nice location. It ended up moving into a dark spot under the rock. I thought that that would be ok as long as it was happy there. It seemed to be doing just fine until i got home today to find that its tentacles were very short in length compared to what they were when i brought it home the first day(and even the next day). I walked away for about 30 minutes and when i came back to check him out he had sucked all of the tentacles in his mouth. I do not know what this means. Is it dying? I have had an anenome before and never had any problems with it and never saw it do this. I really want to do what ever it is to help it from dying. Could anyone help me out with this?

I am currently using a T5 18watt Daylight and a T5 18 watt actinic blue.
The lta ate yesterday if that helps. I would try to get a picture of it but since it is curlled up under a rock i dont think that that is going to help at all. I will try me best to get one for you to look at though, and i have noticed that the tentacles are starting to slowly come back out along with some other junk. I am not sure if this could be waste? I will try to attach a picture in a few minutes.

I have attached 2 pictures to my gallery for you to view. The pictures are not the best but could be worse. It seems to be getting better in looks. I know that something came out of it once the tentacles came back out. I will asume that it was just waste that needed to be extracted from the anemone. I have spoke with someone else that said that the anemone will do this if it needs to extract waste. I just do not understand that if the anemone's love the light so much why mine would hide under a rock instead of being out in the open where it can get the most light available?

ask some of the senior members but i dont think if your going to go reef u should have gravel in the tank.that collects alot of detrus and will cause ammonia and nitrates to spike.personally after everything i have learned a sand bed is alot healthier.what kind of filtration are u useing and how big is your tank.check your parameters.also what are u feeding it and do u have any clowns hosting the anemone.i think you need to read up on what type of tank u want.that was the biggest issue when i first started.im just a novice trying to help

Im no senior member either, but i would think that the reason why its not comming out from under the rock is because its not getting that much light when he's out from under the rock. I would really consider upgrading lights.

I hope some heavy-hitters would chime in on this thread.

Thanks again. I really think that you are right on the reading up on things. I had a tank before for over a year and never had any problems with it. I ended up parting ways with the previous ex and had to leave it behind. When i decied to start a new tank i was hoping that it was as simple as the last tank and i am finding out that maybe i was just lucky the first time. I also wanted to coment on the sand bottom as well because i am not a 100% sure as to where i can purchase this. I do not have a lot of options in my area and even where i went to get my rock and anenome i had to travel. I do not recall that they had sand availible. Is there any advice you would have when it comes to purchasing the sand?(if i can find anyone around that sells it)

buy live sand it has water in the bag for growth.i believe u can order it online if someone will be so kind to link him.check pet stores the place where u bought ur anemone should carry this.plus answer some of my previous questions so everyone has a better idea of what you are going to need for a successful setup

i wouldn't recommend the live sand, IMO opinion it's just wet sand. get sand from drsfostersmith.com or another online store. usually cheaper than the sand at lfs and thats including the shipping.

if the anemone wasn't getting enough light it would probably be extending up toward the light it is getting. maybe it looks like it's under a rock because thats where it attached and hasn't really inflated completely. actually after looking at your pics that looks like the anemone really isn't hiding. like duke said, i would get rid of the gravel. if i were you i wouldn't buy anything else until doing some reading up on Reef tanks. this site and reefcentral.com are both great. on reefcentral.com you might also find a reef club closer to you. also check out the "book club" for suggestions on good books to read.

I have a 29 gal. tank and have been feeding the anenome krell shrimp. I am not up on the technical side of the filtration but it is rated for a 40 gal. tank. I also, have a protein skimmer but it doesn't seem to be collecting anything. It is bubbling but it does not bubble over the top. My parimeter levels are ok but i have been having a hard time keeping the nitrate levels down. Any suggestions on keeping them stable? Currently i do not have any clowns in the tank but would like to get some. Could this help the anenomes health by have a clown?

You have to be sure to get the correct clown for you anenome or the clown wont go near it or the anenome will eat the clown, I would get rid of the gravel get sand dr foster smith has cheep shipping for sand last time I checked.

Bubble tips host many clowns and are a good one to start with if you dont have much more in you tank I would think about redoing the whole thing after reading a little on what you want to put in the tank

good luck

I had a few LTA's, all took a few days and some a month to come out of the rock work, one Rose 3 months later, all lived years and had to go to larger tanks.
I would not worry about a clown for it at this point, the clown depending on size may shut it down more until it has found where it wants to be.
As far a turning inside out it is expelling waste most likley,(maybe a bit of stress).

There are people on the board the know a lot more that me on anenomes.
I sure one of them will chime in soon enough.
I would not worry too much if the water, flow, and temp is fine.
If you have low lighting that may be a problem in the future, but not in the first few days.
It will find where it wants to be(probably top of the tank) if the lighting is low.
Let it move and don't try to move it around, you need to build you tank around it once it settles in.

Whatever sand you get make sure it is well rinsed since now the tank is set up with animals.

The one in the pic was in the rock work and I did not see it for 3 months, ended being in the tank for 3 years with a breeding pair of clowns.
May I add a very mean pair.LOL

Im not an expert but i dont think the anem will harm your clown. Also i dont think that having a clown contributes to the health of anemone so much that the anemone wont need sufficient lighting.

You need to keep in mind that anemones need bright bright light to thrive. They often require intense metal halide lighting which is why im pushing the idea that 36 watts of T5 lighting wont nearly suffice. Also keep in mind that anems outlive humans in the wild and often take months to visablly react to bad conditions. Many times its too late to help, so when there are signs of stress one should take immediate (and percise) action towards finding out whats actually going on.

Btw how big is your tank?

My tank is only a 29 gal. tank. I am very interested in making the change form the gravel to the sand bottom. I really think that it would look a lot nicer. The gravel is to fake. I also understand the need for additional lighting and will address that in my tank. I took a look at the anenome this morning before work and it looked almost as good as it did origninally when i brought it home for the first day.

By the way Kedd that is a beautiful picture. I really hope that some day mine could be just as nice!
