has anyone out there set up a tank with organisms that come from only one place? I've had this theory for a while that it would make sense to keep animals that naturally hang out in the same waters together.

...doesn't it seem odd to have fish from the Pacific with fish from the Red Sea, for example?

...or does this just make me a fish-racist

what do you think?

You forgot fish from Indian Ocean East Africa, yes it's a big mix and yes it's odd but when you buy you think more of the species that you want and less from where they come from.
So I bet many of us have fish from a mix of places, what about you?

Well I personaly am trying to do that but only with the fish. In my tank I'm only going with red sea fish. I was thinking of going all the way but then I thought that would be to hard. LOL

jhale, that is EXACTLY what I'm talking about - GREAT thread! Thanks!

so my point is that different areas have different conditions, and if we're going to keep these fragile and precious animals hostage - or, alternatively, if we are going to learn to propagate them in captivity and at the very least, keep them healthy and happy for the duration of their life span (possibly even lengthening their lives by removing them from the fishes/organisms that might have eaten them in the wild, wouldn't it be most likely to succeed, if we created a system that mirrored their natural surroundings?

Good to know lots of others are thinking about this!
