Hi !!
I am thinking on built a Protein Skimmer.
I am seriusly thinking in a Downdraft type.

I really appreciate if you can post pictures of your DIY skimmers here, post your experiences and the modifications you performed on them to make them more efficient, What kind of pump are you using, etc....

TIA.

Hey Guy,

How are you generating bubbles in your skimmer?

I'm not sure of the method (venturi, downdraft, air stone?)

Looks great and cheap!

I am agree !!! How do you generate the bubbles?

That skimmer works great, but I don´t know where do you get the bubbles.

TIA.

The skimmer is in a sump in the basement. The water falling from that height creates the bubbles. In a variation on the "when life gives you lemons, make lemonaide" theme, he has taken a common problem of basement sumps (bubbles created in the fall) and turned it into a asset (waste removal).

To paraphrase Martin A Moe, Jr, "there are many, many ways to bubble water and collect foam". My first DIY skimmer was made up of pvc parts, two-litre bottles, part of a baby bottle, etc. and it worked quite well.

The standpipes suck in air as the water goes down, there's a LOT of pressure at the bottom and it churns the air into really tiny bubbles.

I have no clue what type of skimmer it is, I just wanted to remove the little bubbles. They are so fine that it takes a while for them to float to the top and I couldn't figure out how to get rid of them. This thing is almost 4 feet high and seems to get rid of the bubbles.

Guy, that has to be one of the coolest methods I have seen to remove the microbubbles generated by overflow. Very innovative or at the least creative.

Here is my contribution....made this for someone..he is using a MAG 18 on it. It uses the Beckett foam injector...and a needle valve for air intake control. I am making a few more very soon...

Guy,

I think that is one of the most inovative idea I have seen thus far!

and Fudge,
That's one cool skimmer...

if only my family members would appreciate fine engineering like that... All they ever said was, "What's this ugly thing here..."

This is the first one I made for a hang on skimmer. Since this one I have made three other versions and am making the final design shortly. I don't have pics of the newest ones yet but should in the next while. This one was made entrirely with my dremel and a mitre saw.

The new hang on's have flanged collection cups for removal, offset injection for a longer contact time and all kinds of goodies. Since this pic was taken I have modified this one so that it runs more efficiently. The waste collectors are pretty much all the same. Haven't changed a bit.
