I've had my leathers (finger, yellow toadstool) for a few weeks. Recently I've noticed the toadstool has a brown tinge to it in various spots and that the finger's polyps are not extending well. The finger has already 'peeled' once after putting it in the tank. I read this is normal. I have since moved it again and it's not looking too happy again. So, my question is, do you think these guys are getting too much light? They are about mid ways in the tank (55gal 20inch deep), just sitting on top of some LR with no shade of any kind. I have 4 110watt vho's two of which are atinics. Thanks for your help.

No, I don't think so. My toadstool is under 3X250w MH, up towards the top. Is it in direct current/flow ? Mine hates that. It loves current above it.

I sent the guy a money order and he's Fed Ex-ing them tomorrow. The guy seemed really legit, so I reckon (yeah i'm from the south) that I'm going to be the proud owner of two lawn seats for JB on April 13th!!

michelle: like you said, the peeling is normal. They do this to get rid of any algae/parasites living on their surface. The light shouldn't be too intense--I've got the same in my tank.

How long has it been in your tank? Perhaps its still adjusting to your tank.
Also, I agree with emily about the current. Mine hardly ever stay open with direct current, but, it can help remove the waxy peel when it's 'shedding'.

just another thought; its not close to anything with a sting, is it? I had a finger leather a while back that had to be on the other side of the tank from my goniopora, even though they weren't touching. I've read that the toxins produced by some species can affect animals several inches away. I don't know how true this is, but, it might help.

I pretty much agree with the above posts. I had my toadstool under a 400 watt halide and it did fantastic! The peeling was normal. It seemed to do this a LOT when I first got it, and rarely once it settled in.

The only point I disagree on is current. My toadstool never really came fully out until I added more water motion to the tank. When it got some good current, it expanded beautifully. Obviously, it shouldn't be directly in the path of a powerhead, but it sure liked as much flow as I could give it.

I have had them about three weeks. They were some of my first corals so no, there is nothing near them that would sting them. The finger looks like it might be going to peel again. It has a shiny look to it and I think it got that look the last time it happend. Thanks for the replies
