I have about 17 hrs on a new Ushi 250 watt 10k HQI bulb. The system is a Hamilton. The bulb has a yellow tint to it with very fine black spots(pepper size). Is this normal break in coloring? Thanks you Stan

That is definitely not normal. Either you received a defective bulb or it is upside down. I don't know what else could be the problem.

Is the glass nipple pointed up toward the cieling? If not, the colour will be yellow.

Also, Ushio bulbs take at least 100 hours of operation to achieve the brilliant pure crisp white. Before that time the colour will be slightly greenish.

I'd check to make sure the nipple is pointed up and wait 2-3 weeks before contacting the place where you purchased it.

Good luck,

-Nathan

when you say "glass nipple pointed up", what exactly do you mean? I have looked at my bulb, and am still not sure what the "nipple" is. Also, is this nipple present on the HQI as well as the Mogul?

Thanks

Guys,I use 250 watt HQI's, there is only one way to put them in. Its not a matter of the nipple being up or down, at least with my PFO pendants and Ushio bulbs.

The color should be a crisp white. What you think is yellow might be crisp white to me

I may be mistaken, but it appears to me you are referring to the actual color of the glass lamp itself, not the color of the light it produces?

The coating and "specs" you are seeing inside the arc tube is a mixture of the stuff that produces the desired spectrum, specifically Halide, Quartz, Iodide. When the lamp heats up, those particles turn into a gas.

1. I have the 400W Ushio single ended Mogul.

2. I don't know much about the physical characteristics of the double ended HQI style, but I'd guess it's pretty similar apart from being double ended rather than single ended.

3. My 400W bulb has a light yellowing at the bottom of the inner glass envelope however this does not affect the colour of the light. I believe that this yellowish stuff vapourises when heated.

4. Here is a photo of mine indicating the nipple in the correct position.

Hope that helps.

ok let me clarify what I believe we're talking about here. First, yes I believe eaglet is talking about the mogul ushio 250W 10K bulb, not the double ended bulb. I know I am. Second, this "bulb with a yellow tint" he is referring to is the bulb itself, when you look at it when it is not on, the filament has a yellowish residue on it. Mine do have that, however no fine black spots. Third, Nathan where exactly is the "nipple" on the 10K 250W Ushio bulb? could somebody provide a picture of this? I fear that mine (and eaglet's) are mounted with the nipple not in the vertical position and therefore that's why the yellow residue.

Nathan, I can't see the pic you attached. Thanks for the reply tho. I also believe the yellowish stuff vaporizes when the light is on. FWIW My bulb produces a crisp white color. FOund the nipple. It's on the glass filament itself. Mine was not vertical, it was horizontal. I have corrected the problem, will see if it makes a difference - thanks.
