This tank is lit with 2 x 400W 5500K with 4x28W PC blues. It gives a very pleasant white light. Basically the 5500K bulbs emit a yellow color that is about halfway between the ultra-yellow/green of 6500K Iwasaki and the crisp whiteblue of a 10K German.

I will try to post a better pic tomorrow.

Here is another photo of the above tank:

With supplemental blue, the bulbs are a year older now and haven't been replaced!

These are two 50 gallon aquariums with 250W MH over them.

The 250W 5500K is about 8 months old and the 10K is brand new so it's not a fair comparison, also for some reason the ballast firing the top tank may have some problems it is running noticeably dimmer, time to bust out the lux meter and swap the bulbs around.

Did you ever find an explanation as to why the 5500K is noticeably dimmer.

Josh,

Just a point I like to make that 5500k color can work fine on a reef tank. Back in the late 80's and early 90's, they were the best avail and many hobbyists had very successful tanks with these and even better success adding actinics.

People would probably scoff today at my 1991 200g lighting config which was ONLY three 175w 5500k's and 2 40w actinics. Everything in the tank grew or propagated under lighting which would be considered very inadequate today.

No, there was no significant difference in lux output from the bulb, however switching to a different ballast caused the bulb to be noticably yellower. This is some funky effect cause by the ballast and affected the 6000K GE bulb as well. They are the exact same ballast BTW cap and coil made by Advance no explanation. The bulb has significant amounts of carbon buildup and just may need replacing.
