My 75G has a builtin overflow box that is in the lower rear corner of the tank. From its bottom, it flows into the sump which houses the skimmer - standard. In the overflow box I've been adding a piece of the blue filter media to help collect waste. In the sump, I have also spread a cloth on the trickle plate for which I spread phosphate reduction compound as necessary - which gives a nice even way for water to flow over the compound. I just started giving my corals black powder food and the thought occured to me that the filter media would inhibit the micro food from staying in water the tank after it has gone through the overflow. I know that the filter media is not necessary - but is it actually doing harm? Should I remove all media material altogether and just purely depend on skimming? Thanks for your thoughts.
