In my premade hood, they are about 8" above the water, maybe a little less. There is an acrylic sheild on that hood so I don't worry about splashing. I keep the bulbs 10" above the water in the hood I made.
I currently have my 400W MH about 7 to 8 inches above the water. On my new tank I'm going to drop that to around 4 to 6 inches depending on the final hood design. Most MH bulbs have splash/uv shields already and shouldn't be adversely affected by a little spray. Several people keep thier MH bulbs as close as 3" above the water.

I want to install 400 watt MHs to replace my 175's. My problem is that my hood is designed so that the bulbs only sit 3.5-4" off the center brace. What could I do to make sure the center brace does not crack? Or should I just build a new hood? This is a 200 gallon Oceanic.
About 3-4 inches, depending on where you measure (they hang downward slightly in their sockets). It's a narrow hood. Given my druther's, I'd have them higher. As they are now, I HAVE to have splash guards (bulbs are too expensive to replace), and I would really like to get those out of there. In a new setup, I would mount the bulbs higher, say 6-8 inches (firmly, no drooping this time), and not run splashguards.
