I recently purchased a massive piece of branching green star polyps from my LFS. It was completely out in their tank which has 4 vho 2 actinic 2 daylight, and is now under my 175 w and 250 w metal halides. It is placed in the upper middle portion of my tank. My water parametes are great but it is not coming out, could it be too much light or not enough current?

star polyps take a while to come out. my regular stars took about a week to finnaly extend, then it grew like crazy.

Actually it was just luck. I went to one of the 3 decent saltwater stores by where I live in North Canton, OH (about an hour south of cleveland) and they had a huge, beautiful branching star polyp there. This is not the normal kind but the branching and is beautiful well if it ever comes out.

what is branching GSP? never heard of it. are they coming out after your lights are out? maybe the MH are more light than they are used to. or maybe your water is different from what the LFS had so it might take awhile before theyre used to it.

MY NORMAL GSP was from aquarium concepts under vho, and took a week to open under 250watt MH. yours will be fine! your lucky! my local aquarium (waikiki) has some branching, but they won't give any corals to local reefers, even if they are native zooanthids! belive me I asked

I got in a rock of GSP Friday and not all of them have popped out yet. But, they more seem to be coming out day by day. Must take them a while to get up the nerve or something.

My green stars did extremely well under PC's, so your lighting should be fine for them. However, the intensity of your lighting compared to that of where you purchased them may well explain their reluctance to come out. As others have already said, they'll be out in a week or so. Once it takes hold, be prepared to frag! Stars are the weeds of the reef!

good luck,
rw

The branching type is very nice if you can find them. They aren't nearly as intrusive as the regualr GSP. In fact the LFS that sponsers our local reef club, reefworm know the one

, gave use all nice huge frags of this type at one of our last meetings since he had a ton of it. I noticed it isn't as green as the type encrusting type with the purple mat, but still has a nice yellowish green hue to it. I am sure I could ge some more although I don't know how much shipping to Hawaii would be
