Are there any bottom feeders (besides catfish)that are safe to put in a fish only tank? We have a 300 gallon with one tessalated moray eel, one large golden puffer, two small puffers and four small blue damsels. We need something to rid the tank of food left overs on the bottom. We have a huge protein skimmer, micron filter bag, fluidized filter bed, live rock and live sand (not very prolific sand yet). The left over food doesn't make its way to the overflow box and therefore just sits on the bottom.
Any suggestions?

You could set up powerheads on the bottom of your tank to blow the food and waste back up into the water column so it never has a chance to accumulate. The powerheads (if they are not to strong) will push the food up into the water and the overflow (as long as it is operating properly and remains clean) should take it out.

I had a Bamboo shark that would feed off of the bottom. Was much more active at night and does not get too big. It likes lots of bottom swimming room and may jump out of your tank if startled. Mine went carpet surfing once.

Looks like a miniture nurse shark with the barbells and everything.

Look them up for referance. Very hardy.

Bill and Theresa,
You might also consider 2-3 shrimp, unless you have some fish types that would eat them or harass them to death. Cleaners or Scarlets are voracious eaters and will hunt down scraps anywhere in your tank. Fun to watch, too, especially when they start scattering eggs. Your fish will love that!

regards,
rw

p.s. Just re-read your post and I'd be leary of shrimp with that eel. I'm not familiar with its eating habits or preferences, but do know that some eels will take crustaceans. Definitely check that out b/f adding them.
