The product feels like Kalwasser, but nothing on the packages indicates that it is CaOH. Anyone here uses this product currently? Good? Bad? How can we tell if this is CaOH for sure? Thanx in advance.

Use the money you saved to buy some more reef stuff. Relax it works fine and is nothing more than food grade calcium hydroxide.

I want to take this time to tell you to be careful. You can VERY easily overdose with this. Also, you can overdose without and adverse affects to anything other than equipment. I used Pickling lime for two months, and without realizing I cemented up my main return pump, all of my powerheads, and my protien skimmer pump. I was able to rejuvinate the powerheads with a good vinegar bath. I like the idea of using the pickling lime. Just like anything else, not to over-do.

I use it in addition to my Ca reactor for the last several years. There is no problem and it is much much cheaper.

It is exactly the same as the Kent stuff. Calcium hydroxide is nothing more than water and hydrated lime. Kent's ingredients should read "Hydrated Lime", otherwise they are trying to fool you.

It is really not so much what it is, what what it makes when mixed with water, in this case CaOH.

This is the same thing as CaribSea selling 20 pound bags of sand for saltwater tanks and charging $30 per bag when Southdown sells the EXACT same stuff, mined in the EXACT same spot by the EXACT same company for playgrounds in 50 pound bags for $3.00.

In short, we're fools.

it is 98% pure and kalk is 99% pure. i have used it for months w/ no ill effects. it is the same stuff but doesn't have the mark up because it isn't a reef product. use it and save some $$ for some fish or corals.

i use about 1 1/2 to 2 tsp/gal. my alk is 3.2 and ca+ is about 440. perfect!!!

use it and be happy saving some money!!

Yeah.. get rid of it.. it CANT be as good as KALKWASSER... I mean.. just listen to that name.... KALKWASSER... It's German.. so you know it has to be good. You know, like Mercedes-Benz and whatever...
KALKWASSER... just glides off the tongue... dont it?

About clogging the pumps when over-doing pickling lime, wouldn't kalwasser do the same thing if we over-do-it too?

Learn something new everyday! I never heard of the pickeling lime before. So this is the same as kalk? Great! What kind of store do you find this in...grocery? What is the price difference?

We need a list of "Tricks of the trade" somewhere. That includes info like this, Southdown, the use of vinegar to clean, etc.

If you can't find in locally at the supermarket you can MO it directly from Mrs. Wages for $1.67/lb. http://www.viaweb.com/mrswages/mrswagpiclim.html
Looks, works and is the same as the aquarium variety with the fancy German name
(Kalkwasser). BTW both will jam up your pumps with calcuium deposits if you don't clean them once and a while with vinegar.

I ordered from mrs. wages...9lbs. for $19.03 with shipping included...not bad. Last year, I bought Kent Kalwasser..450mg for $12..what a rip off. Thanx to those that shared alternatives like this...your effort is greatly appreciated.

Walmart will carry Ball's pickling lime for $0.79/1lb can. If that is too expensive then you could go to your local feed store and buy a 50lb bag of hydrated lime for $6.

If you want to go more hitech, more expensive, and with fancier terminology than Kent to do the same thing, then go here.

Lunchbucket,

Try your Walmart first. All of the ones around here carry the Ball's brand. I bought all the cans on the shelf (ten) when I saw it. Been using since January or February and am on the second can. Lasts quite a while.

I didn't buy the stuff at the feed store. Just made a couple of phone calls around town and several farming/feed supply stores carry it. Its just called hydrated lime. Didn't ask what the brand was. Look in the phone book for farming or feed supply stores in your area. They should carry it. I also don't know what they use the large quantity bags for (ie if it's food grade) maybe heavy duty canning. HTH
