I put him (orange bar fairy) on hold for a week, he looked great, ate like a champ, so I took him home. 3 days later he stopped eating, the next day he was on his side, the day after he was floating and unable to swim. I returned him and got full credit, but any ideas? Where are they from? Possibly from an area that collects with unsafe methods?

The hawk is looking great, by the way. What a pig!

In my exp. cyanide caught fish dont stop eating but dont digest the food properly giving them the sunken abdomen. Cyanide caught fish will cause the liver to fail and some times sudden death even when the fish was eatting healthy. Was there any external spots ect.? What were you feeding, do you use selcon?

Sorry to hear that Kendell. I agree with Ben. If it was cyanide caught, they can eat like champs and then die for no apparent reason. Just as he described, the cyanide screws with the digestive system and ultimately does them in. I am surprised you got full credit, especially after they held him for a week and you had him for 3 days. I would say that is a great policy at that store. Cheer up, if he was eating for you...you did all you could.

I was feeding Marine Cuisine and mysis shrimp soaked in selcon. He looked fine until he just all the sudden got sick - very pale and hid in the rock. He barely hid at all the first day or two.

Tan, I had a Firefish do the same thing, ate real well and showed no signs of injury. However, over about a 2 week period he seemed to starve to death. I have often wondered besides cyanide poisoning if these fish could have sustained an internal injury at some point that does not allow them to digest food properly.

Glad to hear you got refund. Next time you may want to let the LFS hold the fish for colse to 2 weeks. (My LFS has a standard practice to quarantine fish for 2 weeks) This will put any loss on them. Also gives chance to see if any problems with fish. Fish are going to be stressed by being in a bag 24-48 hours. If you take it home a few days after, it barely had time to adjust to LFS water and then had to adjust to your water.

Maybe ask if LFS buys from AMDA seller and ones who support safe harvesting.

Sorry to hear about your loss.

C.luteovittatus are caught from the Micronesia (Marshalls, Carolines, Pohnpei). Although I can't be 100% confident about the collection practices there, I have not heard reports of cyanide collecting in this region. I wouldn't rule it out, but there are many other causes that could result in the symptoms you described, ranging from intestinal tract infections to external fungal infections.
