I need some suggestions for a pump to pump both fresh and saltwater up 2 flights of stairs for water changes on several upstairs aquariums. I currently have a 100ft hose in the basement that I cah pull up the stairs to pump the water. I just need some pump set up. It is just for water changes and does not run continually. Is there any kind of utility pump that would not cost an arm and a leg to set up in my basement? Perhaps some type of home sump pump... but I do not know how it would hold up to the salt. I thought that maybe I could just flush it with fresh water after use. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Little Giant sells a freshwater pump that will pump down to 1/4". It is designed for freshwater, but I have used it many times in salt and flushed it out afterwards. It is very powerful, and I think it pumps up to 25' head. It also has regular garden hose fittings. You can drop it into whatever your water's in and use it. I don't know what model it is, but it is very powerful, and is shaped almost like a cone, with the intake on the bottom.

I think you're gonna need a heavy duty (read: expensive) pump for that much head (I'm guessing ~25 ft). You could also use a series of pumps that each pump up a smaller amount, like 10 ft, to a reservoir where the next pump sits. Does that make sense? That way you might get away with two *much* less expensive pumps. For that matter, you could just buy one pump and do it in stages since you only do water changes once in a while. Pump water from the basement from the basement to a garbage can on the first floor, then unplug that pump and move it to the first floor, then pump that water up the rest of the way.
