Last night while I was looking at my tank I noticed a couple of clouds of sand shooting out from between my live rocks, like there was some sort of scuffle going on. Looking around I noticed strands of white mucus like stuff hanging on some of the nearby rocks. This mucus stuff looked just like the bristle worm eggs Dr. Ron identified for me a couple of weeks back. I kept watching between the rocks to see what was going on when I noticed my mantis shrimp (can't catch the bastard) covered with this mucus stuff holding on to half of a good size bristleworm. Now here is where it gets weird. I saw my Neon Dottyback, also covered with this mucus stuff fighting with the Mantis Shrimp! The Neon was attempting to steal the bristleworm from the Mantis. Well, the Neon got the chunk of bristleworm from the Mantis, then the mantis chased down the Neon and stole the Bristleworm back again. Well, ofcourse the Neon went back in and put a whooping on the Mantis Shrimp and chowed down on what was left of the bristleworm, bristles and all.
It was pretty incredible to watch, they were really going at it, kicking up all kinds of sand and detritus off of the ground and rocks. After the Neon was done with the bristleworm he went looking for the Mantis in his little caves. Hopefully the Neon plans on eating the Mantis also!
Anyone else experience something like this before?
