Last Saturday night I got engaged!
icon_smile.gif

I am thinking of going to some place tropical for our honeymoon. I'd like it to be fairly modern, but I'd like to stay in a somewhat private place (like maybe a bungalo) but near a city or other attraction with night clubs and bars. I don't want a bunch of abnoxious college students getting drunk and annoying. Also snorkeling on the reef is a necessary part. Perhaps Hawaii would be good?

Anyone have any suggestions?

Hey, way to go dude! Hawaii sounds great. Most of the places I've been in the Caribbean don't have the night clubs etc aspect, but there might be some nice places in the Bahamas.

Congradulations Nathan. We picked Hawaii for our honeymoon 11 years ago and weren't disapointed. You can set up a combo trip to spend time on several of the islands and see more that way. We picked Kawii and the big island. Just sorry we didn't make it to Maui. There were all kinds of accomodations, resturants, night clubs you name it on both of those islands. The snorkeling is fabulous - we thought better than the deeper scuba diving we also did. Lots of life - fish, inverts, sea turtles, stony corals all in 6 feet of water. I've traveled some in the Carribean, Bahamas, and Mexico and all have there own charm but nothing that compared to Hawaii. Just my 2 cents enjoy.

Congradulations!
Hawaii is a wonderfull place. Crowded, a bit sterile, expensive, and a pain to get to from the East coast. But some really cool stuff to do and see. If money is no object, you may want to consider Bora Bora --breath taking.
If you want to consider the Carribean, you won't see the landscape or amount of corals as in the S. Pacific, but its alot cheaper and easier to get to. The Carribean has limited reefs for corals but the fish are wonderful.
Considering you will hopefully have more than marine aquatics on your mind, my suggestions for a Honeymoon in the Carribean are Grand Cayman (Stay at the Retreat at Rum Point whuch is away from the hustle and bustle of 7 mile beach but can be accessed via ferry) Grand Caymen has great diving but only fair snorkling. You can rent a little skiff and get anywhere by water and also get to the better snorling reefs.
Aruba's great for fun, but you may as well go to Jersey Shores for the marine life.

Lastly, I haven't been there, but I'm told that Grenada has some great reefs and good night clubs.

My favorite place is Cay Caulker Belize.. but the night life is not that wild and the island is small. There is a cool river cruise you can take into the jungle and visit some Myan ruins as part of a day trip. The reefs.. WOW I could not do them justice by trying to explain them here!

Snail went to Atlantis and said it was awsome. There would be more entertainment and night life so maybe Atlantis would be more your speed?

Congrats and good luck in you new adventure!

I have a friend that got back from St. John about a month ago. She also went to Hawaii not too long before that. She went scuba diving at both and felt that Corals and fish were more beautiful at St. John. I've never been to either so I can't really say, that was just her opinion.

Just went to the British Virgin Islands in May on my honeymoon. It was perfect. Not a whole lot of night life where we stayed (Bitter End Yacht Club) but it's there. The snorkelling was great.

Did I hear someone say Bora Bora? AWESOME place! It's one of the Society Islands in French Polynesia. Although the night life isn't all that great, anywhere in French Polynesia (main island you have heard of is Tahiti) is beyond belief! I got a marvelous package to the island of Moorea for $1250/person, including bungalow for a week, all transfers, air fare from LA, 14 meals (one of which is a "motu picnic", you are taken to one of the small "islands" with a picnic meal and given the day to explore or do whatever
icon_wink.gif
), a Tahitian dance show and a trip to Papeete, the main city of the islands. Check out some of the other packages at Tahiti Vacations They have all kinds of packages to suit all kinds of budgets!
Also, get a travel guide; there are some spots for night life but you have to know where to find them.

A note on Bora Bora and the rest of the Tahitian Islands: I went there for my honeymoon, and Moorea was the best of the islands. The people were friendly, and the water was beautiful. It's a small island, and you can get around the whole thing on a bicycle if you want. We stayed in a bungalow that you could jump off the balcony and land in the water. We fed fish there every night and day, and there were tridacnid clams in the water right under our balcony, and also an octopus. Large stingrays would swim in and out at night, and you could swim from the lagoon out to the reefs, which were all under 10 feet deep on one side, and then down to 30-40 feet on the other side. On Bora Bora, the people were jerks, they treated Americans like crap, and although the island was surrounded by beautiful waters, I didn't like it as much as Moorea. Also, depending on where you stay (most of the resorts are on small islands surrounding the main island) you might be severely limited on when you can go to the main island. Tahiti itself is nice, but it's pretty dirty. We stayed in Papeete for only 2 days, and it was neat to see, but it's really a very dirty place, and the water is brown as is the sand. Did not compare as far as beauty of the water was concerned, but it did have cool stuff to offer like a lot of shops and the market (where you'll see to your horror all the fish that you'd want in your reef offered for sale as food for pennies). HOWEVER, there is not much to do after sundown on these islands, except go to a restaurant. By the way, with the exception of Top Dive on Bora Bora (which I think is American owned and operated), the food generally sucks, the sea food all tastes rubbery as if it sat around for a few weeks before they cooked it, and it's VERY EXPENSIVE. By the way, one night at a hotel usually runs around $800-$1500 in a non-package deal, but you can rent a house on Bora Bora for less than $3,000 for a month.

After our honeymoon, we went to Hawaii, and I found that it was nice to be somewhere in the states, although it was much more crowded. There was lots to do, and the people treat you like a tourist, meaning they cater to you.

By the way, your first concern about where to go should be based on when you're getting married, because depending on the time of the year, your options will be limited by rainy seasons. By the way, if you choose the Tahitian Islands, when they say June is the dry season, it's not. June is the end of the rainy season, and July and August are into the dry season. We were told the rainy season was in March and April, and June was the middle of the dry season, and it rained the first 2 days we were there and was overcast most days (although we still got fried through the clouds and patchy sunlight).

I'd better do the patriotic thing... US$1 = AUD$2.04.

Great Barrier Reef! Maybe Lizrd Island, although if you want something more cushy and honeymooney, one of the Whitsunday's or maybe Hamilton Island. Culture is comfortingly familiar, yet different enough to be interesting.

St. Thomas / St. John

We were there in January. Awesome beaches (Magen's Bay or find a secluded one on St. John), nighlife, friendly natives, great shopping, great snorkeling (Coki Beach - St. Thomas, Trunk Bay - St. John). Coki Beach is COOL, I could stretch out on the beach for a while, get up, put on my fins and mask, walk to the water and the reef if only 15 feet away.

St. Thomas is a little commercial but will have the nightlife you are looking for, while 2/3rds of St Johns is a national park with no development. You can take the car ferry between the two islands. Definitely RENT A CAR, the taxis are expensive!!! It takes a while to get used to driving on the left but it will become second nature after awhile. I had trouble when we returned home, kept driving on the wrong side of the road.

Congrats Nathan,

As a scuba instructor, reef keeper and lounge lizard i have the following suggestions for you.

Cayman Islands

Nice place, worked there for a year as an instuctor. Excellent reefs, stingray city is the bomb, and it has two of the best dive sites in the world. The nightlife and bars are very relaxed and the food is allways good. Only problem is they all shut at 11:00, (religeous laws) but im sure you wont have any problems keeping yourself ocupied in the evenings, nudge nudge, wink wink, say no more.

Hawaii - Kawaii

Best hotells i have ever seen, (and mummy and daddy have shown me allot if you know what i mean). 30% indigenous species, where as the rest of the world possibly has 2%. Honestly the fish will have you wetting your knickers. Excellent hellicopter rides around the island. Not to mention the island has to be one of the most romantic places i have ever been, the views are orgasmic. And because its the "garden Island" its very quiet and away from the mob, you could even find your own beach most days. And if you get bored you can jump over to Honallulu. But Kuaiaii (sorry im dysletsic) is amazing. My mum was beside herself about this island, and shes seen it all.

Egypt - Hurgada

Sereous sereous, deep dark and dangerous diving. Best left for a trip with the lads. But i have heard recently that the govenment have been putting a load of money into tourism.

Again congrats mate, may you life together be long and prosperous and brimming with happyness.

I've been to St John, and the snorkling there really is superb. Waterlemon key is the best. But the nightlife there is pretty much nonexistant, and the other USVI are not that convenient and I'm sure would not measure up to Hawaii...
