I've got this red filament algae growth that won't stop trying to grow over alot of stuff in my 55gal reef... this stuff is very pervasive. Any ideas on how to combat this particular variety? Thanks!

I also have a 55 gal tank with red algae. Mine is a wine red color, very deep red. I had read up on it and most of the red algae is from some big name (kjwrhgdhm), but to put it bluntly from what I gathered it was from tap water or water other than RO/DI. But I have been using the RO/DI water and still have some, albeit not as bad. I have tried to pick it out with my fingers and it seems to help somewhat rather than just scooping it under the sand and hoping it would disappear. But would sure like to find out how to get rid of it altogether.

Yup, I've got it too. I'm using RO/DI water and a protein skimmer. It appeared about 4 months after I set up the tank, and it is spreading, although slowly. I've got a medium sized patch, and 2 small ones on the opposite side of the tank. My tank is 20 gal, so my options are limited for finding a fish to eradicate it (maybe a blennie?).

I have a yellow tang, I put him in the 40 for a few days and he cleared up the two small patchs, dime size. I use RO/DI also but just had this little bit which is now gone. It was a deep red short filament type algea. I put the tang in there temp. as I aclimated a new fish to my 75. A tang will outgrow your 55 though. Mine is starting to seem to big in my 75. HTH

is your tank less than 4 months? did you do any big changes lately?
I noticed that this kind of turf usually just fades away in a couple weeks

There is a chemical you can buy at your LFS to get rid of it. I had it growing all over my floor put it in and in two day the stuff was completely gone. Good luck
