wow, i haven't seen the nikon 950 that cheap. that's an awesome deal if you can get it.
nikon pictures are fantastic. the macro mode gets stunning clarity at close range.
i bought the nikon coolpix 775 for $400 bucks at Best BUy + a 128 MB flash card for $70 on ebay. the minimum focus distance on this camera is 4 centimeters.
i think the min. focus distance on the 950 is even less - at 2cm.
for taking pics of your tank - these things are awesome.

the sony f505v is a great cam. macros are awesome and you can get .8 inches from an object and stay in focus. they just released the updated model the f707 which is said to be 5 mp. greater detail! i know hwen i get some finds up , im geting either a f505v or the newer f707. all of my pics were taken with the f505v.

Olympus does have some solid digital cameras without even stepping up to their high-end models. Here's a pic taken with a Olympus D-460Z, after compression and shrinkage for the web:

greenbalisale.jpg

This was taken without any special accessories, but the nice thing about the D-400 series is that they can accept Tiffen lenses, giving you much nicer final product if you want. When I bought my D-460Z last spring, I got it for $226 (camera, one set of non-rechargable batteries, 32 meg card and a free USB reader through a promotion). Prices are probably even lower now.

Is it a high-end Nikon? No. But the pic quality isn't bad at all (especially in my hands; I'm a totally unskilled photographer) and it costs a fraction as much.

Hey there,

I just bought a new camara, (two in fact). The first one was a Sony 505 I believe. It had 3.3 MPix and a super duper zoom lense. However when I got it home I took some pics and compared the results with the Reciept then took it back. The macros were not that great. After going to about 10 stores and checking things out (I am a tight-ass) I settled on a Nikon 950 Coolpix. With it you can do Macros at an inch away. I can get really good pics with great clarity. It is 2.1 MPix. You can got to the 995 if you want 3mpix but it is alot more expensive. The Nikon 950 is on sale for $499.00

I have seen some good deals on ebay as well but with that much money I want someone to grind if it doesn't work...

I can send you some pics but I don't know how to post them on the board

In my opinion the Olympus D-3040 just about matches the Nikon 990 for less money; I still think the nikon might have a little better lens for closeup shooting, but the D-3040 has an EXCELLENT low-light lens; I can shoot indoors in the evening without using the flash much of the time. If you're an experienced photographer the 3040 allows you to set exposure manually, automatically, shutter or aperture priority, has multi-zone metering, spot metering... seriously this thing has every feature my Minolta SLR does, I've had a great time with it.

I had the sony 505 and the nikon blows it away! It isn't as big and impressive looking but the pics are much better. i am glad I got it...The Nikon 990 and 995 are better of course but more money. And at 499 the 950 is pretty hard to pass...

Ha, forget all that BS.

Get the Sony Mavica cd-1000.

It's just been discontinued so prices are dropping, takes great pictures, and video, and audio.

And it burns to a CDR so it can hold 120pictures in higest format per disk. Disk is only 50cents.

Screw all those media card things. They cost you an arm and a leg and you have to erase them to reuse them.

Nikon coolpic 995, love it. Macro and long distance shots are great. I won't bother posting pics, look at my site and you'll be able to tell which ones were done using the 995.
