help ID golden brown plant/algae

Sorry for no pic.
What I have is a growth of what looks to be some sort of algae.
It is on a rock that is close to the surface and it is smothering my polyps. It stays short, is fluffy looking , a golden brown color and when you put your hand near, they close up. There was a long stringy shoot out of the middle but I picked it off.
This stuff is growing like crazy.

If it closes up when your hand goes near it, it's not an algae or plant, as no marine plants have that kind of reaction. More likely it's some type of worm plume or polyp, since it exhibits motion.
