If I were you I would start with some leather corals - they're beautiful, easy to keep, and grow quickly, so they can be very rewarding.

Mel,
I see some other posts you started and looked like you are just stepping into this hobby. Welcome! (Warning, this could cost you though.....)

Looked like you need to do some reading before jumping into the water. I recommend, as you have been told, Julian Sprung & Delbeek's book "The Reef Aquarium" Volume 1 & 2 as a starter. You need to get the basics down first before you go out and buy livestocks. Otherwise you may be just throwing your hard earned (I guess) $$$ down the drain, not to mentioned the millions of lives you wasted (each coral you get is a composition of several to several hundred different animals.)

Welcome to the hobby! Danmhippo is dead on when he says it gets costly!

I have had excellent luck with mushrooms and I also have a leather. Both are good for a beginner.

I'm in s/w for 9 mths. and there was no mistake to get my bouble coral.
Is very tough,no problem with light(low or high),currents, position.
Make sure to get a healthy one(buy an opened one that hasn't dead white parts).
I was told that they release stinging particles,I had it up and put it down in the sand and is just OK.Still I didn't have stinging problems.
Also I have mushrooms(the neon greens opened within 3-4 weeks, the blue and striped ones immediately) and an umbrella leather. The UL had 2 bristle worms burrowed in it(probably after it got in my tank)damaging it.Check for holes on the base or the top(mine had it on the top).
I had to slice it in two(till I found the culprits) and after all that, the two halves are just fine.
Make sure, you get a healthy one.
Good luck!FM

Welcome to the hobby. Some days I feel like I'm Tom Hanks in the money pit. But I have lost very few things over my year with my reef because I have read a lot of books and take lots of time to ask LFS their opinion on quality of fish or coral I'm getting. I also spend lots of time looking over frag in display tank to make sure no damage. Also learn the ropes on acclimating your coral. Don't stick it up top of tank on first day home or you may fry it under your MH lights. Slowly over a week or 2 move it up to a spot where your frag meets its lighting requirements.
Starters: Mushrooms easy, split often. Leather easy too. T
If unsure about placement ask on the board here. Lots of peeps with years of experience and also Dr. Mac and Brian from atlantis aquatic and others I don't know of offer advice too.
