Not sure why, but PA did not post any holiday hour notice or anything on their Voice Mail and I drove 2.5 hours to Indy with my two kids and 7 month pregnant wife and got there and the closed. Spent the next 2.5 hours very pissed off driving back. I feel like calling and totally complaining, but am not sure what to say or what good it would do me. Spent $30 in gas to get there and feel very put out by them right now.

Grip over, had to vent...

its always good to at least call ahead of time before you take on a 2.5 hour drive.

Man, I would be teed off too. If they didn't give me such good service, I would go off.

I would at least mention it to them.

I know... hence an additional layer of frustration. Actually I did call, but left early EST and arrived at 12:30 pm CST. They are open for walk in's on Saturday from 12:00 pm to 3:00 pm CST. Anyway, I ahd called to see if they had left a message stating their holiday hours or whether they would be open or not. The message said they would be open "this Saturday, Dec. 22nd". Go figure...

Jason is a great guy, tell him your dilemna and I'm sure he'll compensate you with a discount or something. It may help a little with the frustration.

I signed up for their mailing list and they send it out weekly. Besides prices and promotions, they list any store hours for the upcoming week. While that will not solve your previous car trip, it may help for the future.

Chris,

I think getting a discount is a little over the top.

It is odd that they said they would be open and were not though.

Pez,

I don't know. You may feel different if you had spent your Saturday driving to a location that has only one day a week for walk-ins, but did not bother to leave notice on their main number or on their main source of interface to the public, their web page. I for one work 6-7 days a week and although it is not the $30.00 in gas that it cost me to go there and back, it is the loss of a weekend day that I happen to have had off. As it was, my wife went, but mentioned she would have liked to have spent our day doing something else prior to our arrival after a 2.5 hour drive to find a closed establishment. To make matters worse, she did not talk to me until Sunday after church, the next day! Not even one word. It was the loss of the day, not the monetary loss that bothered us the most. I would not ask for a discount, but if one was offered, I would not turn it down and it would go a long way towards repairing my impression and willingness to do long term, continued business with Jason. I have been buying from them for years and they have always taken care of me. So again, I am only frustrated by the lack of notice in their ablility to fulfill their own walkin hour policy and the loss of a quality day with the family. Would you feel different?

Whoa, 30 bucks for 5 hours of driving, talk about bad gas mileage! Well, when people complain that they drove from NY to get to our store and it was closed they didn't call beforehand. No sympathy, gotta call, just cant assume...

Thanks for the link. I don't feel any less frustrated, as it was REALLY buried. Took me a couple of clicks to figure out you meant "current livestock list." I have only bought livestock from PA twice in 2 + years on a walkin and see it basis. I don't remember having ever clicked on the current livestock list to be honset. I've found their livestock to not be rare to show quality everytime I visited the warehouse, so I wasn't too interested in what current livestock was being sold. I want to see what I am buying when it comes to livestock, whether it is an actual picture or in person at the store. I've purchased almost all my dry goods from Jason on a regular bi-monthly basis though. I'm glad that it was at least on the page somewhere though. At least others may have come across it and not experienced the same situation I did. Don't get me wrong, I will still buy from them, but I have spent the last two days realizing that they are no longer the most inexpensive place on the web, which is what drove me to do business with them in the first place. BUT in PA's defense, EVERY time I have had a problem, they have taken care of it right away, which does mean a lot in my book. So I haven't decided where I will probably buy my new Euro Reef skimmer, 4 replacement HQI bulbs and Calc reactor. I may just get my additives and misc. stuff from Jason. Something to think about... one bad haircut from your regular stylist and you will take your business elsewhere for sure. Getting the next couple at no charge, if you had a long term relationship would probably make you think about doing business again. After all, everyone has a bad day..., but if you get nothing you give nothing. I go out of my way to do walkin business with PA. I see nothing wrong with them going out of their way to keep my business. Afterall this is a lifetime hobby, not the typical buy once and done.

Also for those advocating calling first... It takes two and half hours to drive there, if I'm not slowed down by traffic or weather. If they open at 12:00 pm (not central as their site says, but EST) then how would I get there in time to actually buy anything, if I hit I'm slowed down on the way? It wouldn't work. I am not one to be angry for any amount of time. I am not angry, but I am not encouraged either. I am a fairly loyal person when it comes to doing business with a company. I'll call Jason and see what happens. All I can do is explain my situation and see what he says. If he doesn't care, so be it. If he does, then all the better. I can also say that most people wouldn't bother saying anything or even provide the vendor the opportunity to repair any ill feelings, regardless of how they arrived at them. Most people would simply take their business elsewhere. I like PA and would be glad to continue to do business with them.

The times I spend with my family on long drives are some of the most treasured times of my life. Being forced to relate to each other in close quarters like that for a considerable length of time has incredible value for our relationships. I'm sorry that you found PA closed but what a great opportunity you had to spend quality time together with your family.

220,

I sympathize with you, as I have done the same thing before (although, not with a pregnant wife). I understand your frustration and maybe Jason will not let it go unrewarded. I just don't think it is a necessity. I hope you had a great holiday otherwise and I wish you and your family all the best.

-Tom

p.s.,

I wish I could get my wife to go into a fish store

I'm sorry and I know it can be frustrating, but I think you should have talked to Jason before you posted it here. Things happen.

Sure I've spoken my mind about my LFS's, but I don't name names.

Just my opinion

for a petite pregnant woman with a large baby, not even the most comfortable vehichle would make a difference. There would still be something that ached.

I feel your pain! My wife is pregnant again. It is well worth it though.

I think Jason will give you a discount not because he did anything wrong, but because he's a fantastic guy to deal with and he is definitely on the same level as all his customers. A pump that I bought from him broke LONG after the warranty period, and he offered to send me a new one for free. He felt it was actually his duty to keep the customer happy in this situation, and he would have an easier time dealing with the manufacturer than I would.

I think that if you told him your story, he would just offer the discount. Don't ask for it, just tell him what happened and let him know you were bummed out and that you wish his main webpage had said they were to be closed.

Thanks Dan. The ride there was actually fun, but the moment she realized we could have been doing something else together as a family and not sitting in a car for a long drive, she was upset. It doens't help that she is 7 months pregnant either. I will definately wait until after the baby is born for any long trips. It's not a hormonal thing, more of a comfort thing. The Navigator is comfortable, but for a petite pregnant woman with a large baby, not even the most comfortable vehichle would make a difference. There would still be something that ached.

I made it up to her though. I'm good at that.

We have actually had very good times on trips, so I do agree with you. This one was just a good day with bad circumstances...

Hi,

I'm sorry you drove all the wait out and we were not open. I'm sure we can discount a few corals to make up for the gas you spend.

We are open only every other weekend on saturdays. We have had these hours for 8 months. The only notice we post now is on the livestock page, we try and remember to change the voicemail, but it's always a little crazy around here.

Please understand that we are a mail-order company though and that is our focus. Although we have invested a lot of money in acrylic coral tanks for local viewing (fish tanks on order), so we do like our local crowd. It just takes about 8 hours of prep time and i have to use about 7 extra employees to handle that 3 hour window we open. So it is quite difficult to open up and to get everything organized. I almost always get time to change that livestock list though, so you should be pretty safe going by that, or always feel free to email me at [email protected] before you make the trip and i can verify for you. We will be open this weekend the 5th.

thanks

jason
