Usually takes about 24-48 hours for a skimmer to start working well. Most have oils on the acrylic that has to break down. You can wipe the inside down with water also, to get any excess oils off of it.

Howdy,

I a CS6-3 on my 180g tank. I tested the skimmer when I first got it, and it only took 1 hour to start skimming. Mind you, I put the skimmer in a rubbermaid tub, filled it with fresh saltwater, and dumped in about 16oz of skim crud from a skimmer in another tank.

I don't think there is a standard water level for these skimmers. I had to play with the drain tube to get a level in the skimmer that would pull out very dry foam. I haven't looked for a while, but I believe the bubbles should start going up the riser tube, so that the air pressure forces the waste laden bubbles into the cup.

You made a great purchase,

Scott.

Howdy again,

The water level is probably about 12", well below the top of the overflow tube on the CS6-3. The CS6-3 is almost 30" tall, so the outer overflow tube is about 14" up from the base of the skimmer.

The shorter models (CS6-1 or 2) would probably have to be in more shallow water, but should be fine as long as the sump level is below the water discharge.

Good luck,

Scott.

I was having this problem when I first installed my CS6-1. I called EuroReef and they instructed me to extend the tube upward. That instantly brought the bubbles up into the collar.

The sump water comes up 9 1/2 inches from the bottom, both in the sump and in the skimmer (which sits on the bottom). When I power up the skimmer, bubbles come up from the surface and rise up over the top of the collar and into the collection cup. It began as soon as I raised the tubes (under the foam) up as far as possible. The only change in skimmer operation from Day 1 is that the skimate formed in the first week or so was DISGUSTING smelling. Now there's almost no smell. I empty the collection cup about once a week. I could not have done this at the beginning, because the smell would have driven everyone out of the house. I love this skimmer. Right now I have it on a timer. When I feed baby brine shrimp in the evening, I switch off the skimmer. It switches itself back on at midnight, after both the day and night crews have eaten.

If you can't get bubbles up into the cup, call EuroReef on Monday. They'll talk you through it. It worked for me ;>

i am a little slow so just to make sur i understand it the water in the skimmer is between the large ring that is used to skreew the colection cup onto the skimmer and the actual cup part or do you just have the tube that controles the water hight up as high as it can go thanks for all the help

Neal - If I measure up 9 1/2 inches from the very bottom of the CS6-1 EuroReef, I am at a point below the grey plastic screw top ... maybe an inch or so below it. That's where my water level is.

Take the foam sleeve off and you'll see that there are two extension tubes with O-rings. Position them so that you get maximum extension. Carefully replace the foam sleeve and turn it on. I had a hard time getting mine just right. I have it so extended that it's on the verge of popping off, so I have to treat it gently.

Cindy,

If you lower the water level in your sump (or raise the skimmer) you'll find you won't have to keep the outflow tube so high. I have a CS6-2 and Euroreef recommends the water level be between 6" and 8". Mine is right at 6" and the tube is only extended a couple inches. You'll also get drier foam with the water level lower. I would imagine your foam is pretty wet with the water as high as it is.

Just a suggestion.
