I know this sounds dumb but I got this coral the other day and now I can't for the life of me remember the name or it. Does any one know?

Soft coral most likely a Cladiella sp. if the when the polyps are retracted the coral becomes stark white.

Common names would include Colt Coral but common names are the only thing more screwed up than real taxonomic classification. Try to never use them.

It dosn't change to white when it is retracted. It stays about the same color as the picture a brownish purple. I've looked at pictures of cladiella before and they don't seem to look anything like this or are they all different.

I agree with the above posts, it's probably from the family Alcyoniidae which includes the Cladiella genus. As written already by MickAv8r the common name Colt coral is a very broad name used to refer to many corals in this family because so many are hard to identify.
