I added a new tang to my 180G reef tank. Other tangs chase him but he seems OK and is swimming around and eating.
The new tang has one eye with what appears to be a cloudy white cover. Any suggested medication to help this situation out will be appreciated. Of course a reef safe method.
My reef inhabitants are all doing otherwise very well and growing. My reef chemistry is good.
Thanks for any suggestions

Sounds like it got a touch of Pop-Eye(Expophthalmus) or possibly a bacterial infection, probably caused from being the new guy. In any case I wouldn't use any medication in a reef tank. As long as it is eating thats a good sign. Give it a good varied diet and the good water quality of the reef and it should clear up. I'm not one for the chasing and trying to catch it for a hospital tank if it's eating because I feel it's just putting more stress on it.

Good Luck

Hey osama,
Since it sounds like the new guy has some stress, you may want to try a little garlic in the food. Could help prevent any ich infection that might be on the way. There have been a number of threads on how to feed garlic, the effectiveness, and the safety. Do a search, and I'm sure you'll find a few threads.
Good luck.

Moe gives good advice. IMO it is a must do every time you add a tang to a tank other wise the risk of ich is too high.

FWIW Kent marine now offers a garlic product like kolic extract called Garlic Xtreme. As long as your tang is eating and the constant chasing stops the eye should clear up fast.

THANKS TO ALL

I have used garlic successfuly for ich in my reef tank. I will try it for the new guy/tang.
I appreciate also the idea to always use garlic with a new comer.
For info. He is swimming around more, eating and picking at the rocks. Very encouraging sign. He is doing some chasing of his own!!!

Try adding vit c to your tank in a 500mg per 100 gal each day.
Also feed some vitamins and wait.
If the cloudiness gets both eyes then place him in a q tank with anthibiotics
I´ve had some tangs with cloudy eyes, the best treatment was to leave them in the tank and feed well

I don't like to use garlic in my tank as I've had bad experiences with it in the past, but my suggestion is to just leave it alone. One of my pacific blues had a bout with ich and velvet and it spread to his eye. I introduced a constant supply of macroalgae and fed him PE Mysis for a few days and it cleared up. I don't think garlic would help anyway, as I don't think that a fish has a slime coat over its eye necessarily, and cloudiness of the eye is usually an internal parasite, versus an external parasite like ich.

I had the same thing happen to a coral beauty a while ago now .I did nothing and it went away by itself.
I thought it may have just bumped into something as i'd had the fish for a couple months when this happened, so was'nt a new tank intro thing.

Now HERE's a topic I know. Unfortunately.

I have a Naso Tang. I also had a Koran angel, Heniochus, and Banggai cardinal. They didn't make it.

Nothing was changed, it just came on out of the blue. Ich and pop-eye on the angel, then the butterfly, then the cardinal. (Strangely enough, the Naso had ich all along and pop-eye on and off but turned out to be the toughest fish.)

I fed garlic when things started looking really bad. I can't tell if it made any difference; probably I would have had to use it for longer.

I tested my water and couldn't find anything wrong, aside from a slightly high alkalinity.

I did a 25% water change (I generally don't change water), added a second skimmer, and added my old Aquaclear 500 filter with a bag of carbon in it. This was last weekend. At this time, not only is the Tang doing well, but he is fatter than he's ever been since I bought him. He's doing great. No more ich, no more pop-eye.

I believe that the water can test out ok and still have a problem that stresses the fish.

Good luck,
djp
