That's pretty damned cruel. How about providing it with a new home? Or returning it to your LFS? I'm sure someone would find this remarkable creature interesting.
They make great pets...easy to care for, fun to watch, will live through just about anything! I have one living in a 2.5gal bow front on my kitchen counter. Anyone who comes to the house wants to see the killer shrimp. My three year old has named him Bubba.
OMG I HAD A MANTIS SHRIMP IN MY TANK !!!!!!
ok now i know what the cracking sound was it was a mantis shrimp living in a piece of live rock in my tank ! my wife pointed it out to me she thought it was some neat bug she had found I WAS TERRIFIED !!! heres how i caught him............
Luckily he was living in a borrow in a piece of live rock at the top of my reef which was easily removed so i took the rock completely out of the tank But be careful what I read about these say they can split your finger right down to the bone in under a second ! Total time from reef to bucket .....one heartbeat ! Next I filled the bucket with fresh water (not great for the rock but we are talking mantis shrimp here) cephlopods amphipods and anything else beneficial on this rock died a quick death i saw them leave the rock en masse. After about 5 mins in the bucket out he came MAN THESE THINGS ARE UGLY ! at which point i removed the rock and placed it back in my reef (wasnt crazy about putting my hand in there after seeing this guy) Maybe thats why my wife will watch this tank for hours but refuses to put her hands near the water ?
If you cant get him to come out in fresh water i read that you can use a turkey baster to squirt soda pop into the whole as they like carbonated water even less that fresh.
I have this guy in a sealed container of fresh water for an hour now and he still refuses to die ! If there is an antichrst of reef tanks i think i found it. this thing gives me the heebeegeebees EEEEEWWWWWWWW!!!!!
I must say as a keeper if mantis shrimps it is great you got him out of the tank. But I think it was cruel to leave him in fresh water. How would you like it if I put you in a room filled with only Co2. How would you like that. If you wanted to kill him make it quick and painless. Instead of slow suffication. Or find a home for him.
rich and poor, I see you are in Pa. are you near philly? Is it still alive? if the answers are yes I would be happy to take it off your hands!! Please email me at [email protected]
I have a noisy mantis in my seahorse tank. Luckily (knocking on wood) he's not done any harm to the horses, but I'd like him out of there.
I did have a second mantis in that tank who conveniently relocated himself to the overflow box....I relocated him to a reef club meeting for "show and tell" and then put him in the sump of my 55 where he can live happily ever after.
Any ideas how to catch the other one? I have no idea what rock he's in.
Jenn, I just caught one about 15 minutes ago using the inverted soda bottle trick. I tried an X-Terminator trap but it would not work. I would watch the mantis go into the trap, get the food, and leave without the door closing on him. I tried to set the trap where it was a hair trigger settiing but he still would not spring it. Of course when I would reach in and grab the trap then the door would close.
You guys kill me about the cruel part... You kill off your fish w/ bad tank params, support industries that do worse things to mammals, and then give a guy a hard time about killing a pest. Geesh!
