What are the current thoughts as to what are considered safe lower limits for tempature for a reef tank during the winter?

2 wks ago I had my air conditioner maxed out and was having a hard time keeping the garage below 86 degrees. last night I had one tank dip down to 72 degrees. What would be considered the safe lower limits for most corals for sustained low temps and what would be considered safe for short term dips.

86 is a little to warn form me,72 is to cold. You dont want to have that much of a temp swing, 79-82 is the range I keep mine, I would set the heater to keep tank above 78.

What type of light do you have maybe more fans, how close to the water a they.

I kept my tank around 76 last winter, dipped down to 70 for a day a couple of times. Didn't notice any problems.
