My maroon clowns spawn fairly regularly. This time they did the nasty on a readily removable surface (empty hagan quickfilter intake I use to protect my bubble-tips from the powerhead). So I can take this out on day 7 (or whenever) and try. I've spent the day reading Joyce Wilkerson's book, and the only thing that really has me worried at this point is my ability to feed them. The catch is they spawned on Thursday and I am nervous if I don't collect this batch, they might not use this surface again. Anyway it seems like a convenient time to try, but I need to get me some rotifers and green water in a hurry. Any suggestions for reliable mailorder sources?

Are there any alternatives that are easier? I don't need maximum yield, I just want to raise a few hundred

I have had good results ordering Rotifers and phyto plankton from:
Mountain Corals
537 E. 750 N
Ogden, UT 84804
801-782-7937

Their planktons have always arived in good shape via piority mail.

If your going to try to grow out the present batch of eggs I would think you might want about 1 galoon of the rotifers and 3 gallons of their "Velvet Green" phytoplankton. Of coarse shipping that much via priority mail will cost a little bit you might ask them how much they think would be needed to sustain a clown hatch. You might also ask about getting a plankton net or screan (not sure if they cary and or sell the plankton screan or nets) good luck with your project.

In the back of Joyces book there is wealth of retailers for that stuff. I think the problem with Maroons is they have a much longer time before weaning of baby brine. Amphiprion are much easier then Premnas(sp?) because they can be weaned off the rotifers by 3-4 days instead of 7-10 if I remember correctly.

My suggestion is to remove the larve with a syphon as suggested my Moe in Marine Aquarium ref. or use one of the methods Joyces gives in her book like the coffe filter method. This way you wont mess up there nest. Joyce does claim that her clowns stopped spawning before because she placed the tile back in the wrong angle.

Your very lucky to have a breeding pair, I am working on one my self. I do agree with Joyce that unless you breed a few different types of clowns finding retailers to buy them could be difficult. Why buy one spieces from you when they can get all the spieces they want from there regular source. Thats why I think local breeders should team up and make a list of what spieces they have for sale. This way the retailer could buy many spieces of clowns, cardinals, gobys, ect. all from your team of local breeders making it worth there while and easier for everyone do well moving there babies.

Sorry for the ramblings

Thanks for all the advice. I think inland aquatics has the stuff. I just want to see if I can do it before I make a commitment to supplying anyone with anything. The clowns did all the work with respect to pairing; I had nothing to do with it. But you are right, it is nice to know the tank is making them happy enough to spawn. I actually just put this thing back in about a week ago after pulling it out to give it the semi-annual cleaning. Normally they do it on a 20 lb rock. The story about getting the angle wrong is quite amusing. I guess the fish were a bit too autistic.

Phew - Now that's a relief. Just because fishfarmer gets away with it doesn't make it right...

Congrats AotS. My chromis keep spawning. Of course they just end up being fish food, but this time I think they may have a fighting chance - they decided to hide under my bubble coral which happens to be right up against the front glass - tiny little buggers.

Good luck.

I have been getting the rotifer/velvet green mixture from Mountain Corals for rearing my clowns. It is GREAT stuff. I have Joe send me a gallon every Monday.

I got a separate rotifer culture going and have also been feeding this culture DT's and it is growing well. So I have a backup.

For your first try, I suggest ordering some mixture from Mountain Corals. That way you can learn how to raise CLOWNFISH, not rotifers. Once you get "bored" with the first batch of clowns, you can try playing around w/ the rotifers.

Rotifers just arrived today and the first few clownfish hatched -- and got plastered on the side of the tank before I realized I have to turn the air down. Man this is stressful...

Well, it is too late for this batch. Most appear to have died in the hatching process. I now have about 10 alive. My rotifers arrived a day late (Express mail took 2 days) and most were either dead or not in there in the first place. With a microscope I counted about 10-15 motile rotifers in 1 ml of suspension. (I'm set up to do cell culture at work so we have the right equipment for this...) So even if they hadn't mostly died it would have been a disaster anyway.

Thanks everyone for the advice. I will try to get my own cultures going smoothly and then maybe try it again some day.
