I have three clams in my 180g reef aquarium. hard & soft corals fish etc are all doing fine but one of my three clams is only partially open. Any ideas about possible causes & whar I should try are appreciated. all three clams are located close to the top on the tank in very close proximity to each other. meaning lighting & water circulation should not be the factor
Thanks for any suggestions

Can you give us a little more info? Things like water parameters, type, and wattage of lighting, type of clams, age of bulbs, etc....
thanks!

My water is at 80F, Alk @ 6dkh (low) calc@ 380 (low)Mg @ 1200. I have my calcium reactor going, dosing Kalkwasser and started dosing B-ionic.
light 3X 175 10000k, 3X 250 10000k and 4 actinic 96w each . Plenty of lights. one bulb is replaced every 6-8 weeks so there is never a bulb older than a year.
I am trying to relocate the one clam in different location to see if different water flow &/or lighting will help. All other hard , soft corals & clams are doing fine .... Any other thoughts are welcome.

Check for Pyramid snails around the new growth area of the shell, they look like small grains of rice and can kill a clam fast if not monitored and removed, also check for parastic shell boring worms, inspect the shell closely for small holes..... hth,,,,, ps.,,, get the calcium up....

What type of clam? Some clam like T. deresa may not like too much light... etc.

Steven, T. Derasa like intense lighting.

The Squamosa is the one that would require less lighting than the others.

The clam is a maxima. For three days now I moved it even higher almost close to the surface of the tank. More water flow & closer to the lights. It has opened up partially and seems better in that locaion. I will monitor it for this week and see.
My calc & alk are on the way up I am dosing BIonic, Kalk & my calcium reator.
THANKS very much for the input

Maximas like to attach their Byssal gland (foot) to a rock. Was his foot recently dislocated from a rock by any chance?

Hi Pathos; the clam is attached very well to his base rock for almost a year now.
It seems to like it where it is now with more water flow & it probably is getting more light. I will watch it for few days & see. I will post how it continues to do. It is a beutiful clam I had all three clams in my tank for 18 months all were next to each other at the same lvel in the tank.
