I'm currently switching my 180 from a FO to a Reef Tank. I would like a special fish that will be reef compatible and yet get large. In particular, I would love to have a fish with a personality. Any recommendations would be appreciated...

I think some of the fairy wrasse and anthias make excellent showpieces. The most charismatic fish I've seen are triggers and puffers but they're definite no-nos for most reefs.

The vlamingi tang is one of those very large open-water tangs. It's not appropriate for a reeftank, in my opinion.

You can tell just by looking at its body shape that it's an open water swimmer.

The price is not important when you consider you will have the fish for years. Thanks James for your recommendations. My research also shows the fish is at home in the outer reefs.....So as the fishes health is my primary concern, I will take a pass on this fish.....

Naso Tangs have personality and they are very compatible with everything. My Niger Trigger is pretty cool. My only concern was for crustaceans, but he hasn't bothered shrimp, crabs or snails. He's not even interested. It's a beautiful fish too. He changes color from black with blue trim, to turqouise, to royal blue.

Some of my suggestions

Harliquin Tusk- Why don't more large reefs have these? Besides rumors has anyone had a bad experince with one of these in a reef. (Beside eating shrimp- which hawk fish do also but everyone seem to keep them)

Copperband butterfly- added bonus of aptasia control

Regal angel or blue masked angel- both a little iffy but the most reef safe of the large angels in the opinion of two people I know of that have tried it.

Scotts Fairy Wrasse or Psychedillic wrasse (if you really don't mind spending cash) - 1 supermale with two females

Hope this helps

Jake
