I put Seaweed Selects in my tank for the PB Tang to graze on. He loves it but numerous small pieces get broken off and are left to drift around the tank. Are these small pieces as bad as overfeeding and contribute the bioload or is it like having more alge in the tank?

My hermits and other sandbed life eats the stuff up so fast I really never see it. If the Tank does not eat it all before the lights go out the hermits and pods and numerous other critters have it polished off by morning. That rock I put it on is the cleanest in the tank.

Don't worry about it. Work more on nutrient export rather than on nutrient exclusion.

I wouldn't worry about picking up the little pieces left over. OTOH, if there is any left over then you are prbly overfeeding.

This stuff seems to have plenty of nutrition, as my yellow tang has thrived on just a daily 1 or 2" square for the last couple years.

This is why I feed nori (same thing) strapped to a rock with elastic bands. Fewer large chunks are left floating. Also, snail babies, starfish, etc. can move onto the rock
during the night.
