I live in Central California where temps can get to 100+ in the summer. We run the air conditioner a little in the summer, but I have a good room ceiling fan and our house is well insulated. The tank will also not be in direct sunlight. I plan to buy a small fan to point towards the open top of the tank. I have a 65gal and it will be a FOWLR. Do you think I should purchase a chiller, and if so what brand?

I am in SF where it isn't that hot, and I need one. I have a 55 gal. reef tank with 96 watt power compacts. My tank is currently around 83-86 degrees. I am in the market for one and am currently doing research on brands, etc..

I live in southern california and my tank has 2 175w mh bulbs and to 55w pc bulbs. I have fans in the hood of the tank and keep the central air on in the summer so the house is always below 80. I have never needed a chiller.

If the room has central air connected, chances are you don't need one. Just provide extra fans to blow across surface for evaporative cooling should do it for you. The temp may be 100+ outside but never in your room.

I am in Southern Cal. and the tank is always in a temp controlled room. 150G dual 400W MH with 4x96W PC. No chiller needed...........yet.

dvb,

your tank is awfully hot compared to the ambient temp and the amount of light you have over your tank.

do you have your entire tank covered, hence no evaporation?
