apple juice?

well, he said that coralated algae eats the sugar in the apple juice and that there was some scientific study on Coral Vital to find out what it was, they found that it be apple juice.
it all sounds ridiculous to me, but what makes me wonder is that he wasn't trying to sell me anything, they don't stock apple juice on the shelf but they do stock Coral Vital.

Ah, that mark weiss...
Personally i wouldn't put any kind of fruit juice in my tank. I don't know about coralline algae going nuts for the sugars but it does trigger a somewhat feeding response out of softies, making them open up huge. Sounds like a waste of time to me, but you never know, it could be the next big thing!
BTW We had some Coral-Vital on the shelf forever at the shop and it fermented...

Yeah...but would you put blood in your tank? The Black Powder product is mostly blood meal. I've used blood meal for years on my plants. It has a VERY distinctive smell and consistancy. It can also be purchased for about $7.00 for 5 lbs at a local nursery. Hmmm....seem to be a bit of a mark up there. The other little blue speckles in the Black Powder are unknown but they are maybe 1% of the mixture.

The "Apple Juice" thing comes from an elemental analysis done on Coral-Vital by a competitor (Kent Marine, I think, but don't hold me to that).
They didn't say it actually was fruit juice, but that the elemental composition was such that it was very close. Not that it makes any difference, but if I remember right, it was very close to pineapple juice.
FWIW, I wouldn't suggest putting apple juice, pineapple juice, OR coral-vital in your tank.

I worked my way through college in a nursery so that's where I learned about it. Meanwhile, we had cutomers from the hills in Marin and Oakland that had deer issues and would use this and concentrated panther piss around their yards to repel deer. Most people thought the blood worked better.

I worked my way through college in a nursery so that's where I learned about it. Meanwhile, we had cutomers from the hills in Marin and Oakland that had deer issues and would use this and concentrated panther piss around their yards to repel deer. Most people thought the blood worked better.

It's cow blood dehydrated and powdered after being collected at the slaughter house.
It is great for plants, however, it's very concentrated and a little goes a long way. Don't use it if you have dogs as they will dig up your plants to get to it. And always spread it REALLY thinly and dig it into the soil as when it hydrates and its in clumps you'll get maggots! It's also a decent deer repelent for some species.
