I'm putting fans on a hood to cool my MH bulbs/water and was wondering which is better: blowing air into the hood or sucking the air out from the hood? Maybe doing both? One at each end to cause a breeze?

I have 3 fans that pull air into my tower on my pc and 4 fans for exhaust. wich helps big time. SO im guessin it would be useful to do your hood with both. pull in the air and push it out.

There's a web page for either a Dr Freeze or Mr Freeze. This guy dropped his whole motherboard in a refridgerated bath of mineral oil. The pictures are are amazing. I did a quick search on Google but couldn't find it again. Later I'll take another look and post the link.

I read somewhere that blowing was better than sucking. The logic was that the fans would corrode faster sucking humid salty air out from under the hood. As opposed to the relatively dry room air. That seems to make sense.

well if you want to get technical you can only pull -14 PSI (one atmosphere) before you get a complete vacum, but on the other hand a highly effecient propeller can pressureize a space aka the hood up to about 500 PSI or 35.71 atmospheres. so i would blow not to mention the cooling qualities and relative lack of airborne salt. I have an IceCap fan on both ends of my 6' hood. I've tried all the combinatons of in and out and my best results have been with both blowing in, across the water and lights, and the open back allowing the heat out. JME. HTH.

If water temp is what you are worried about you would want to blow the fans across the water's surface. If the bulb temp is what you are worried about then blow across the bulb. These bulbs are constructed to operate at high temps so I see no need to blow air on them.

The fans blowing in will circulate enough air around the inside of the hood to keep the air temp down and be cooling the system (H2O or bulb)at the sametime. Fans blowing out will just circulate air in the hood. So, if they are blowing in they are working harder for you.

I blow air on the water's surface of my 29g with a 250w Iwasaki and the temp stays right at 80F. My heater even kicks on sometimes if the room temp gets cool. This is using a single 3" Radio Shack fan.
