I feel that Urchins promote corraline algae growth. I know that urchins eat the coraline but this only seems to leave the rock bare and more easily colonized by the algae.

I keep a fist sized common caribbean urchin and a royal tuxedo in my 240g and they devour the algae on one rock and the move to the next. The Corraline Algae grows back thicker than ever in a week or three.

Don't forget to test for magnesium and strontium. They play a vital role in good coralline growth.

ok just bought some strotium molybedium supplement by kent marine i used this before with success

As far as urchins go i had one once and they stripped my rocks bare of coralline im glad to see yours are fine but im avoiding them at all cost

my LFS said that too much light would hider growth also and suggested i run my blue bulb for a longer photo period and the white one for a shorter period because he says coraline needs the blue spectrum does that sound right ?

my coraline seems to grow better on my grow out shells in my tank than on my rocks I wonder if this is due to a shells high calcium content /

It depends on the type of coralline algae. Most are low to moderate light loving. However, there are intense light loving corallines. Purple and red coralline prefer low-moderate light. Pinks range anywhere from low to high light preferences. I have 380 watts of VHO lighting and the pink algae is flourishing in high light areas and the dark purples and reds tend to grow around the dark fringes and shaded areas. I also agree with the above posts, but I would also recommend iodine additions.
