I have a 75 gallon reef with 20 gallon sump and 10 gallon refugium running off sump. My tank does not have a built in overflow so I have a 1 1/2 inch bulkhead drilled into the right corner to drain the water into my sump. The return is a mag 12 split into two return lines, each of which hang on the back of the tank and end in a "Y" and loc-line (the black plastic stuff you can bend in any direction).
I will be drilling a second bulkhead to drain to the sump this weekend for added insurance in case the first gets clogged. My questions is this - While I have some of the water drained, is there any benefit for drilling two additional holes for the return lines from the sump? (they currently hang on the back with 2 ninety degree pvc elbows.). It seems to me that the lines would be more stable (right now they slide). In addition it would slightly reduce the pump head pressure, as I would get rid of the two 90 degree turns required to get over the top of the tank. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Drilling can cause integrity issues with the bottom plate, but most overflows have two holes, one for the overflow (to the sump) and the other for the return.

I have dual overflows on my 180, each with two holes.

I would recommend going with both holes provided the spacing is correct and the tank's structural integrity will no be called into question.

You have already mentioned the benefits.
