I am considering this coral. Any advice on the difficulty of keeping this coral? Any advice on care requirements?

its a fairly easy coral to take care of...just make sure you have sufficient lighting and calcium.

Can you specify lighting, placement an whether you feed or not? Any additional requirements? long Sweeper tentacles? Growth rate?

Thanks,
Ernie

Ernie,

From what I have gathered before, as I looked into getting it also, they are very hardy and give alot of color and movement. The only real downfall is the sweepers and the need for lots of space. The only reason I don't have one, is because I don't have "that much space" anywhere to dedicate to it. I have stuff jammed everywhere. Otherwise I would have one. I am sure with your care you won't have a bit of problems with it.

I had a great experience with my Galaxia, but had to trade it in when the sweepers became too long. Only real requirements are good lighting and calcium, and a decent amount of flow. For awhile, I was using my power heads to keep the sweepers away from my other corals, but then it became too much of a pain. Overall, it was a great peace. Hope this helps!

I will also add that it is a fast grower. The frags encrust faster than my montipora does, and overall it is my second fastest growing LPS.

I would not suggest a galaxia unless you are willing to give it a 2 square foot area.

Easy to keep and propogate. Tentacles will get over a foot long if the coral is healthy and has a strong current. I had to move mine into my macro sump when I got my surge device.

I got a great tennis ball size peice from Dr. Mac. $12.00 on his special page. I believe they are propagating them. I broke off a small frag and it is growing nicely already.

Good luck,

I've got mine in a high light, moderate flow area. It's about the size of a softball. The longest sweeper I've seen on it was ~6 inches. It's doing fine. I have it sitting on top of a piece of live rock and after a couple of weeks it had already attached to it! A word of warning though. These are very delicate corals. Be extremely careful when handing them as you can easily crush the coralites. Find a good spot for it and leave it there. The less you handle it the better.

They are very easy to propagate and they grow very very quickly. I started with 3 colonies (some of which were only 1-10 polyps on a single stalk, and now they've grown huge) and then got a 4th through a mistaken shipment. I have had problems with the sweepers, though, against, of all things, the other galaxea colonies. The easiest way to get one is to simply snap off a sinlge polyp and stick it in a hole in a rock. It will grow in no time, but watch out for the sweepers. I have heard they can be pruned back by simply cutting them off, but I don't think I trust that method too much (why would you damage the membrane of any lps and risk infection?). One of mine is within 6 inches of some xenia, a crocea clam, a toadstool, a devils hand leather, and some shrooms, and having the current blowing the sweepers away from these others is very effective.

By the way, if I solve my problem by moving one of the colonies, I'll try and snap off a couple of polyps and let them grow into a rock for you if you want. Like I said, you only need one polyp and it'll grow a new colony in no time at all.

Ernie, Tropicorium is propogating these. They had quite a few frags last time I was there.
