My 175W Hamilton TEch 5500K plus bulb just exploded and scared the holy beszesus out of me. Now I have a 60gallon tank to clean up with glass literally everywhere. I even have glass shards is the wood canopy.

Both the inner bulb and outer bulbs shattered into small pieces.

It happened about 20 minutes after timer went on. The bulb was last handled one week ago and I haven't had problems since.

Has this happened to anyone and MORE importantly I need suggestions on how to go about cleaning up the tank.

As well I'll have livestock to sell locally in Denver, CO - please see for sale section. (2 large bubbles, 1 large plate coral, large purple long tentacle anemone)

I heard that oil from your fingers causes the glass to shatter once you turn the light on.I hadle the bulb with a clean towel or paper towel and also you cannot have any water splashing on the bulb. Either raise the light higher or put glass between the bulb and the water

Handling of the bulb will not cause any issues. This only applies to bulbs like halogens or HQI's. Your standard mogul base MH bulb will usually not just explode even with minor splashing.

Many moons ago Coralife/Venture bulbs had a bad habit of exploding with provacation. It could very well be that something similar happened here as this Hamilton 55K bulb is basically the same bulb.

Every now and then a bad egg gets through.
