I was lucky enough to start my tank with show quality pieces of liverock from a lfs owner who was moving his store. He had a 600 gallon tank and he threw me about 40 lbs of choice rock. All almost totally red and purple, and had set undisturbed for maybe 3 years.
Well now Ive decided to redo half of the aquascape and wanted a large piece about the size of a shoebox. Most of the pieces I have are at most football size and smaller. So now I have been trolling the stores looking for that one awesome piece and wanted some opinions on what to look for.
My check list now, from most important to least important:
1)porous, we all know how one softball size piece can weigh up to 10 lbs when a super porous large rock can weigh the same and look alot better.
2)algae growth, I like them with as much coralline as possible(who doesn't), but some come with white and lime green, some purple, doesn't matter. Trick here is sometimes you can get macro algae that you don't want all over the rock, so I like the cleanest pieces I can find.
3)overall shape. I have found that maybe one long flat piece can work, but the best pieces I have are in L shapes or have many arches to use and jagged etc.
So I know this is all very opinion based as far as what looks best, but as I have grown with my tank, I am moving toward wanting 2-3 large pieces as opposed to lots of strategically placed small pieces. Any opinions on what to look for, and strategies to use when trying to be damned picky about your live rock
Thanks for any input,
Dustin
