Had a beautiful 7" lime green hammer coral that was home to my perc.

Noticed the polyps werent extending and some were even 'disappearing' - notice a tiny light ugly crab eating the polyps one day - was able to chase him away with a feeding stick.

So it looks like the showcase coral of my tank is history, my clown is homeless and that little @!*#@!&# crab is still in the tank.

Does anyone know what this might be? Is it common? Do you thinkt the hammer might recover?

Find the crab and kill it. There are a lot of crabs that eat polyps and corals, and you want to get rid of those, or it will go from one coral to the next and eat your livestock.

As far as the hammer is concerned, they will reproduce fairly well, and if you can prevent it from dying, it should recover and reattach to the skeleton if it has detached.
