Really stupid. I live in the South, so it is pretty warm here most of the time. Over the weekend, the temperatures got down in the 40's at night, so I thought I would use the heater to maintain the temp in my 55 gallon reef tank. The stupid part is that I did not give it another thought until I came home from work yesterday (Monday)to discover a slightly cloudy tank with very sick looking corals and dead snails. The temp was over 90 degrees. I have three fish in the tank and they are alright, but I have lost a very large 6 head frogspawn, a pearl bubble coral, some xenia and anthelia and possible my green star polyps and white star polyps along with many mushrooms that have shriveled down to microscopic size. I am sick. I am hoping my leathers will come back, along with some of the xenia. My zooanthids and yellow colonial polyps do not look any worse for the experience. My heater was set on the lowest possible setting. I almost dread coming home from work today. I don't know what will be left. I cannot tell you how beautiful the frogspawn was - just awesome. Oh well. Live and learn. Please check your equipment if you haven't used it in a while. I will never forget this lesson.
