I have a Knop HOB skimmer and am having trouble removing a replacing the collection cup as the rubber o-ring is a very tight fit. I have read that silicon grease should be used to lubricate it. Is this safe and are there particular brands / types I should use or is there a better alternative?

Cheers

Vaseline is used in greasing gasket and things, but there is some potential issue with latex and vaseline... ;)

Hmmm. I know that sell silicon rease at the harware store. I would assume that this is non-toxic since it is intended fro use in plumbing applications. Does anybody know any different?

I would look to see if it is reccomended for drinking water or states that it meets FDA approval.

If you are having problems at the hardware store check at places that sell kitchen appliances. They may have it.

Pure silicone grease is perfectly safe and ideal for this purpose. Petroleum jelly (Vaseline) is NOT a good substitute because it can break down certain rubbers/plastics. Silicone grease can be hard to find in stores. Don't confuse it with silicone sprays, which often contain petroleum distillates. I've always bought mine from scuba-diving equipment stores. It's used to lubricate o-rings in regulators.
