my 40g just finished cycling last week and the tank is FULL of red, green, and brown algae. looks like a huge salad bar for a herbivore! that's why i just purchased a yellow tang and a few snails. do i need to add additional food for the tang or will the algae growth be enough? thanks!!

You may find your tang will eat some your algae but may not you would be better of with more snails and perhaps some hermit crabs. How big is your tang a 40 gall is prob a bit small if he is an adult I have a purple tang and it eats nori brine frozen plankton a homemade mix so you will have supplement the feeding of your yellow

My opinion is that there won't be enough for the tang. I'd purchase some of the dried algae and offer that to them everyday. They will eat basically anything you put in the tank. Tangs constantly pick at rocks and the glass walls taking in algae. But that alone won't be enough.

I will leave the issue of a Tang in a 40 gallon tank to the tang police. Just for future thought a tang should be in a 90 gallon tank at the minimum because they need lots of swimming room.

thanks...the tang is about 3" in diameter and will be returned to the lfs once he's bigger. he's the only fish in the tank and seems happy enough for now.
