Yesterday I bought a 20g glass tank to use as a sump for my 40g w 45lb LR. I'm not sure what to get as a return pump. I'm thinking that a Rio 2100 might work (and its cheap), or has anyone had positive experience with a Mag 5? Thanks

I just want to post something that happened to me very recently. I too had a 20 gallon glass tank for a sump. I had a Mag 12 for a return pump in it. Over the course of about 5 months the vibrations from the pump caused the glass to crack and start leaking. Needless to say this was a major mess. So if you do get the Mag, because it is metal, make sure you put some kind of foam padding under it and around it so that it doesn't come in contact with the glass.

As for Mag pumps, the one I have works like a charm and is very quiet.

You mentioned the Rio is cheaper. Keep in mind you get what you pay for. Use the search function on this site for Rio and see how many failure threads you will come up with. I highly recommend the Mag Drive. I had a Rio go out on me and kill my fish. Just alittle advise.

Thanks,
Yeah, I get the feeling that the Rio is a little too cheap. I think I'll get the Mag, everybody seems to like it.

You might think about returning that 20 gal glass tank and visiting the nearest plastics outfit. They could probably make a larger sump for less money and you wouldn't have to worry about breakage. I remove my sump when I do water changes. I clean the sump and the equipment. With that much handling a glass tank would be in real jeopardy.
