I got a nice yellow leather coral about a week ago. It looked nice for two days then it started getting a dark brown slime film on it. The coral is now more of a yellowish green in color. The film occasionally blows off with the current. The polyp haven't came out since I put it in my tank. All my other corals are doing fine and my levels are good. I have 175 watts MH and 150 of VHO actinic. I have moved it from the bottom of the tank to the top and it didn't really make a difference. Is this a normal adjustment for yellow leathers or is this abnormal. The place I bought it said they were very hearty but some times took awhile to adjust to a new tank. Is this true? Thanks for any advice.

Leathers do slime. Keep blasting off the mucous. If the flesh starts turning dark brown or black, then I'd worry about it and would consider fragging it. Yours sounds pretty normal. Leathers are amazingly tough for all the weird alarming stuff they do.

I just reached in and blew some of the slim off and peace of the coral just fell off. Now I think it is starting to die. I didn't realize it was in this bad of shape before now. Is there anything I can do to save it? Should I frag it and if so how do I go about doing it? I can't figure out why it is dying when all my other corals are doing good. I got a Young coral at the same time and place and the it is doing great.

Yellow leathers are notoriuos for being bad shippers. If you can find some of it that still yellow, cut it out and put it in an area with flow going across it. Not much, but enough to make it sway a little. Good luck.

Yellows can be a little tough. Make good clean cuts and put it in a pile of rocks and let it go for a while. It will need pretty good flow to keep it clean.

I hope it makes it.

It may not be too late. I experienced the same and was able to reverse it.

Help it breath a little by putting it in a place with strong turbulent currents.

Update: I put the yellow leather in a spot of high current and removed the dead pieces with forceps. Sure enough a week later it has almost completely recovered. There is new growth were the tips died off and the polyps are now starting the extend. Thanks for the help.
