I've been dosing SeaChem Reef Complete and Reef Plus. No problems for the last few months and corals look good. I havent been adding Reef Calcium. Anyone here recommend these or think I should go with another product? I don't use dosers and I don't have the equiptment to set up Kalk. I'm running out so I wanted to get some advice before I reorder.

The labels on the Reef Complete and Reef Calcium are below. I keep the following corals: hammer, torch, open brain, kenya leather, mushrooms, xenia elongata, yellow polyps, green star polyps, bubble, ricordea, yellow leather, trumpet, and bubble tip anemone. Everything seems to be doing very well although my kenya tree is often tightened up and never really expands like it did a few months back.

Hopefully someone who really knows the additives can let me know if I'm dosing properly and what I might be missing. I am listing the SeaChem product below so you don't have to look them up on your own. Can someone also tell me the difference between the Ionic calcium Reef Complete adds and Calcium that Reef Calcium adds?

Here's the labels:

-------------------------------------------------

Reef Complete ™ is a concentrated (160,000 mg/L) optimized blend of ionic calcium designed to restore and maintain calcium to levels found in natural seawater without affecting pH (formulated at pH 8.3). Calcium and carbonates are essential to all coral growth. If either becomes deficient, coral growth will cease, followed by a rapid decline in coral health. Reef Complete™ also includes magnesium and strontium in amounts proportionate to typical utilization ratios (100:5:0.1, Ca:Mg:Sr). This allows one to maintain these two important elements while maintaining calcium. Reef Complete™ delivers 560x more calcium than is available from an equal volume of kalkwasser solution. Use Reef Complete™ to maintain adequate calcium and Reef Calcium™ to promote accelerated growth. 500 mL treats 8,000 L (2,000 gallons).

-------------------------------------------------

Reef Calcium ™ is a concentrated (50,000 mg/L) bioavailable polygluconate complexed calcium intended to maintain calcium in the reef aquarium without altering pH (formulated at pH 8.2). Polygluconate complexation confers several benefits: it increases the bioavailability of the calcium, it provides a rich source of metabolic energy to help maintain peak coral growth, and it inhibits calcium precipitation/alkalinity depletion. One side benefit includes enhancement of denitrification. Polygluconate contains no nitrogen or phosphorous, thus it is biologically impossible for it to lead to algae growth in a properly maintained reef system. Reef Calcium™ may be used alone to maintain calcium but will provide enhanced levels of coral growth when used in conjunction with an ionic calcium supplement (Reef Complete™, Reef Advantage Calcium™, Reef Kalkwasser™). Reef Calcium™ is intended to maintain calcium levels; if calcium becomes seriously depleted one should either perform a water change or use an ionic calcium supplement to restore the depleted level of calcium. Each 100 mL treats up to 1,600 L (400 gallons).

-------------------------------------------------

Reef Plus ™ is a full spectrum supplement of trace components such as iodide, bromide, molybdenum, iron, manganese, cobalt, potassium, inositol, choline; important vitamins such as C and B12; and beneficial amino acids, such as cysteine, proline, glycine, alanine, and lysine. It may be used as a food supplement. It complements Reef Complete™ and Reef Calcium™. It is a concentrated product: each 500 mL treats 8,000 L (2,000 gallons).

I am sure that Seachem makes quality products. But,I cannot see buying all those different additives when you could get kalk and dose a little iodine, stronium and trace elements. ESV seems to have the best deals. If you cannot drip kalk or do not want to,you can use the two part buffer/calcium additive. But kalk is by far the easiest to do.

To dose you will need to test your water. Then you can dose at their recommendation. After testing again you can increase as necessary(SLOWLY). With the addition of kalk, reef plus, stronium, and reef iodine you will cover most of the bases. Some only dose kalk and nothing else as long as water changes are performed on a regular basis.

IMO, you need to dose the reef builder along with the reef complete or reef advantage. This is also a 2 part additive. The "builder" part is the alkalinity. I have used the seachem products for 8 years or so and am very satisfied.
