Hello, I have an ICE CAP system with URI VHO's that has suited me well but I question if Metal Halide may be a better way to go. Other than my impression that metal halide aquarium lighting looks cool, what is the word as to the pros and cons of each type of system?
Thanks, Steve.
MH are better IMO if you are going to keep SPS and Clams. If you are looking to keep Softies then your VHO's are fine. As far as looking cool...That is all such a personal preferance...It would be a expencive upgrade both in equip and electric bill if you don't intend to do the more light intense species.
Good Luck!

At this point I do not feel a large need to keep SPS and clams, partially because they are not available locally and partially because of my lack of knowledge about them (book recommendation?). The input about the increased electrical cost also makes me question metal halide, as our electricity in Maine is expensive. For some reason I thought metal halide were more efficient and required less electricity.
A benefit of metal halides may be that they would reduce the blue/purple mushroom coral/disc anemones taking over my tank? (I can add a photo if you are interested and I can figure how to attach it.) At this time I collect 100 or so free ones and take them to the fish store every four months and I shoot up/kill many others with kalkwasser to keep them from taking over the polyps. I am open to ideas concerning reducing these.
Thanks for the lighting info. Steve
