If you could buy geen water plankton from a tap style macine {like a five gallon bottled water machine}how much would you want per serving.....what size portion......and in what kind of container......bag or plastic bottle. And what about the idea of live Rotifers and Baby brine shrimp in the mix? -----------------------------BayNanochloropus,Isocrysis mostlikly.and yes the Mixing idea would only be at the pint of sale.....and for same day use.. I dont think the roifers would last long in the salt cultured Micro Algea anyway. Live Micro Algae wont last too long in a bottle, the Dt stuff is for the most part dead . When viewed under a microscope is plain to see that there is very little life in preserved plankton products. The neat thing about alive micro Algae like Nano and Iso is that they Move around like little speed boats {Motile its called} When fed to yours SPS corals, the Corals react like the prey is Zooplankton {fish larval} Because it is moving around and wiggling ......yet ,its a Plant!-{Cool is and understatement} I plan to have a video clip with this movement on tape and play it at the dispenser ,to further explain the benifits of real alive plankton------Thanks ,Cappuccino Bay Aquarium

I guess it would partly depend on the concentration of the mix. If the concentration was similar to that of DT's or the Kent products, then I would have to say some small vials, maybe that hold upwards of 25 mL, something like the vials that come in the Sera test kits. If you went by Kent's feeding instructions on their bottles for example, 25 mL would be a feeding for a 250 gallon tank, more than enough for most people. You could even charge a one-time feed for the container and then subsequent fillings are just for the price of the mix, similar to what some LFS do for RO containers. As a personal perference, I would prefer a container over a bag.

Great idea though, wish more stores would do something similar.

"When fed to yours SPS corals, the Corals react like the prey is Zooplankton {fish larval} Because it is moving around and wiggling "

I don't think this is a correct statement.
My understanding is that SPS corals react to food based on particle size, and possibly some chemical signals. Ron Shimek did a talk on this at Macna a couple years back.
Many SPS corals don't feed on phytoplankton at all.

One thing you need to worry about is the ratio of rotifer vs. phyto. Too much rotifer will yield your customer with a bag of only rotifer after 2 hours.

BTW, DT's are nanochloropsis, they are non-motile and is not supposed to look wiggly under microscope. Moreover, the reason non-motile phyto is preferred to the phyto-capturing-corals and sponge is the "non-motile" characteristic makes them easier to capture and consume in time. That is what I have read from a couple sites.

Hi! thanks for responding. I look at it this way: Corals have developed stinging poylops to capture their prey.If I go out into the garden and "Capture" a Carrot and then use a Stun Gun on it , that would seem a bit excessive? Why would corals have developed stinging cells on their mouths if they were ment to eat plants? Sweeper teniticals are used fot defense, stinging mouths are used to "hold Prey and eat it . Most corals feed at night {when the Zooplankton coms out} ? plant plankton is out all day long ,why would corals "Open up more at night if it was not too feed on the bugs? I am looking to feed my corals a more complete plankton mix.

I keep rotifers and 2 phyto cultures. In the beginning I had some cross contamination with rotifers into a Isocrysis culture. the 2L bottle was completely dessimated in <24hrs. Even a small amount of rotifers in a phyto culture will end up with only rotifers in a very short time. This is OK if you feed immediately since the nutritional value is optimal 6-12hrs after rotifers have consumed the Phyto. This would have to be a one time feed mix only.

Kalkbreath: I like the idea of the rotifers and baby brine in the mix. Will you be selling Prawn eggs by any chance (or can you get them)? I would really like to have some for my bangaii fry. I'm looking forward to seeing your new store. Best of luck! Sally

Wow ,Prawn eggs! I would be interested in that. I have used Sushi eggs with baby Cardinals...Yes the Mixed Plankton idea would be for quick use only, That is why I am having problems with the portion size and container. It would need to be a small portion and cheap container...I hope not to have to reuse the containers , due to contamination issues.I am going to experiment with the idea that refrigerating will slow down the zoo eating the Phyto.Works great with the Adult Brine. Also our Brine shrimp at the store will be grown in the same tank salt water as the fish {One system of the five} This means that the brine will live in your tank longer.

Yes, this is most likely the best approach to the multi type plankton mix...Yet I still not come up with a one time vessle or container that is cost effective ?Also what size serving would you prefer?

What about the plastic test tubes the bars use for shots? You can get plastic stoppers for them too. Talk to a liquer salesman for a vendor. Might even be able to have your shop name inked on the outside. In bulk they should be cheap.

Why not offer the mixed palnkton in a 2 part system, 2 small containers to be mixed together at or just before feeding time!
